Hi Everyone,

  I am a 55 year old female coping with Crohn's Disease, Fibromylagia, IBS. I was diagnosed with GERD in the late 90's. I have it really bad. Ate a meal one night about 7pm, later went to sleep and woke up choking and coughing on acid. My throat was on fire. I am on Prilosec and Reglan. Once I took a Reglan it finally quieted down after about 15 minutes. This has happened to me before. When it happens I take what I ate off my "can eat" list.

Aren't you supposed to take Reglan before you eat as it is a motility drug?

Welcome to HW.  I am Kitt.

Metoclopramide (Reglan) has a number of uses. Metoclopramide helps to control and relieve symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease such as heartburn. It is also used to help people with poor motility of the stomach and intestinal tract. Generic metoclopramide tablets are available.

It is useful in both conditions. I am sorry to hear you have this disorder but you have come to a good forum to learn more about GERD.

Hello beloved and welcome. A cardinal rule in GERD is to never eat that late at night and especially do not lie down afterwards; it's just begging for a disaster. I was instructed to eat by 6:00, earlier if possible and not to lie down or even recline for at least 3 hours afterwards. When you do go to sleep, make sure you're on an incline and not flat. Perhaps you're doing all of these things, but I thought I had better mention them.

Like the others, I was told that Reglan needed to be taken prior to a meal; if I remember correctly it was 15 minutes to 1/2 hour prior.

Welcome! I'm still learning to deal with my reflux, but I identify with your encounters with trigger foods. When I have a problem, it immediately lets me know that I'd better not repeat unless I'm prepared to have some discomfort!

After years of having been diagnosed with GERD, I was finally prescribed Protonix.
Within 3 days (yes, three days), it was GONE! 40mg of Protonix - miracle! I could
eat anything, anytime with not one problem at all. I took it for a few months and then stopped
(I lost med. insurance) and it's only recently started to come back - 5 years later, and
not as bad. It was amazing to eat spicy foods and not have any problems. Protonix
works to repair your esophogus, too, from all that acid burning!
