Can anyone relate to this? i suspect something to do with the esophagus. When I inhale I have a slight pain that travels from the bronchial/esophagal area to the right side of my neck around my throat area. I was treated for bronchitis when I had my first bout with these symptoms, but there was also wheezing in my bronchial airways at the time.  This time when the Dr. checked me she said everything sounded clear.  Yet I still have the painful symptoms and an occasional cough. I am to have a colonoscopy  to determine what is gong on in my gut since my gallbladder surgery in Oct.  Dr. suspects IBS-C. Pain in lower and middle right quadrant mostly, accompanied with lower and middle back pain.  Hope someone can relate to what I am experiencing.  Thank you.

I have never had this but I am wondering if your physician thought the throat pain was bronchitis this time.  Did the pain go completely away with last episode?

Wish I had more to offer and perhaps another member will.

Nice to hear from you. To answer your questions...My Dr. was not concerned about my symptoms this time. I was seen 3 days ago and now the symptoms are more pronounced. (First time around the pain went away, right before surgery. But they came back again a few weeks later.) She was more concerned about the ab pains and my blood pressure. She gave me an antispasmodic, Dicyclomine. Started taking it and seemed to help the gut pain, but today my BP is up again. Maybe the meds are affecting it. I stopped taking it today. Now I have a low grade fever and pain is returning. I am a mess.

Carolyn,

I am sorry the pain is still with you but if your running a low grade fever and your BP is not in normal range, I would call you clinic and talk to triage about being evlauated for continued sx. You may have devloped something new that was not picked up on previous visit.

Seems I probably had an intestinal bug for a couple of days.  Thus the fever and D.  I went back to the Dr. yesterday for my gyn annual.  Same Dr. I went to last week.  She also was sick with the same symptoms.  Anyway, I am stressing out over all of the physical stuff going on in my body.  She thinks that I am bringing on more of the symptoms because of it.  So she is prescribing a mild antidepresent.  I have an appt. with the GI next Friday to discuss everything and to schedule a colonoscopy.  I am not looking forward to that, but I know that it is necessary to rule out things.  I will let him know about the pain in my neck.  He may have some ideas of what could be going on.  I suspect he will suggest an endoscopy.  Thanks for keeping in touch. Hi,

I'm sorry to hear you are dealing with these pains.  I know what you are going through because I am experiencing them too.  Kind of odd that it only hurts when I inhale and it doesn't hurt to the touch.  Like you said, it's almost always on the right side of my neck, but sometimes it hurts right below the adams apple right above where the 2 collar bones meet.

Anyway, I hope someone here can get us some real answers.  Hope you feel better.

Welcome! I am glad to finally have a response to my post. I thought I must be imagining my pain. I have even been told that by my Drs. I am determined to get to the bottom of this though. I go to see a GI on Friday, so maybe he will have some idea of what I am experiencing. I will let you know what I find out. Do you have a cough at times with your pain? Have you seen a Dr. and if so could you tell me what your DX is and what your Dr. has said? That would be great. Have you had your thyroid checked? I have, and as of right now it is not the thyroid.

Hi Carolyn,

I have not been to the doctor specifically for the pain when inhaling, but I have had my thyroid checked and I have been diagnosed with Hashimoto's. Currently, my thyroid is working normally, but I have a 1cm nodule on my thyroid, and my TPOAb's came back extremely high (hence the Hashimoto diagnosis).

I know that this may sound strange, but I'm starting to believe that the pain when inhaling is related to trapped gas. I had the pain almost all day yesterday in the right side of my neck, but by the end of the day it had moved completely down to the lower part of my throat. Today it's completely gone. I've been getting them on and off for months.

Out of curiosity, have you ever been on the Nutrisystem diet? I can't remember for sure, but I think mine started soon after getting on that diet.

PS Forgot to mention that I don't have a cough associated with the pain.

So it sounds like your pain might be associated with your thyroid after all. Doesn't sound like gas, but then again who am I to say. Hope that is all it is. It is odd that the pain moves around. My pain is localized to one area.

No, I have never been on the Nutrisystem diet.

Hey Carolyn, have you ever heard of LRPD, its like GERD but in your throat and not esophagus. I was diagnosed with this a couple years ago and i had some of the symptoms you listed. I noticed at times of flare up, my throat and top part of esophagus hurt or burn, especially if i exercise and have to take deep breaths, I guess from the irritation. Before I was diagnosed, I went to my family doctor who diagnosed me from sinusitis, bronchitis, to possible thyroid problems, anxiety. Finally I went to ENT specialist who simply looked down my throat with a scope in his office and was quickly diagnosed with LPRD. He prescribed me Prevacid and it worked for me.

Hi Carissa and welcome!

Thanks for your post.  I will be having an endoscopy on the 17th which should hopefully explain my discomfort. My GI suspects reflux so I am taking Nexium right now, just over a week. Pain has subsided somewhat, but there are times when I take that breath that I still feel it on the right side of my neck, under my chin/throat area. I hope that is all it is. How long did it take for your symptoms to resolve? I will be having my whole GI system checked.  Never really had any pronounced symptoms of reflux so I was surprised to think I might have GERD.  Also learned that you don't necessarily need to have pronounced symptoms with GERD.  I am learning allot by being on this forum.  Lots of nice people so willing to reach out and help.  Thank you for being one of them.

Hi,

I am relieved a bit to know others are having these pains in the esophagus/right neck area.  My doctor did a CT scan months ago with no remarks and now its back so we're going for an Xray.  Mine hurts on a deep breath, but can also sort of just PULSATE.  AND when I have acid reflux it can irritate it even more.  Anyone else?

 

I had not thought about GERD/LRPD.  It makes sense for me because I have had a recent spate of heartburn... 

 

I am curious, Carolyn, did you ever have any results from your last post??

Looking forward to hearing more.

I am relieved to hear that there is someone who can relate to my issue.  Sounds like we have the same problem.  My pain is not inside my throat. It is somewhere around the glands, under my chin and down the right side of the throat area. It seems to go away for the most part when I take nexium. But I do still feel dull aches now and then. I have shortness of breath and discomfort around the throat to esoph. entrance. Yes, I have more discomfort when taking a deep breath. Had an endoscopy in Feb. and showed inflamation in the lower third, also a hiatel hernia, but nothing in the upper portion. Doc said I should see an ENT or have a CT. I gave nexium another try and wanted to do that before going for more testing. Been on it now for about 2 months. Thing is, I don't experience heartburn, so I really dont have discomfort other than the neck issue. I would be very interested to hear what they find when you go for more testing. Do you take any meds now? Maybe nexium would help. Curious to hear.  How long have you been having the discomfort? Weird isn't it? My GI didn't have an explanation for it.  Please keep me informed. I wanted to follow up on my situation regarding neck pain of unknown origin.  I went to the Doc and he re-prescribed Omeprozole.  He also scheduled MRI and CT's to check further.  After 1.5 days on the Omeprozole (which is now available over the counter), the pain was entirely gone. I canceled the scans and to further my recovery, I got a new Massage Therapist and scheduled a visit.  He was able to fix me in one session!  I feel like a human again.  It goes to show you - never give in, and NEVER underestimate the power of STRESS!

Wow, I am very impressed that you responded to the Prilosec OTC so quickly and that you were even able to cancel you CT SCan.  I use Prilosec for my GERD and it really works well for me.

I could use a deep massage right about now as you said stress can bring out so many sx and pain. 


Congratulations for hanging in there and getting to the bottom of you problem.

Interestingly I just posted about this same issue just the other day and Kitt, you responded quickly. The nexium helped my neck pain which tells me that it definitely was the GERD. I stopped taking the Nexium 2 weeks ago because I ran out of it and lost my health ins. Of course the pain came back almost immediately. Just spoke with the Dr. and he said to try the Prilosec otc although I did not have much success with it last time. So, back on with the meds. Hoping the prilosec works this time around. Much cheaper. Best of health to all of us!

Hi.. I had gallbadder removed 02 to discover high blood pressure and panic attacks followed. Lorazapam took care of the high blood pressure, I take a low dose of .5 mg at night.  complete hysterectomy in 89 from endometriosis(sp) As long as I can remember I've had stomach problems.. I've had 2 colon  and 1 egd and told I have ibs along with reflux.. Over the last 2 years I've had stomach cramps along with cold sweats it seems about once a week. I go to the bathroom sometimes 10 times before immodium takes effect. Then after immodium I don't go for 2 to 3 days so I try not to take immodium. I've learned what to eat and not, but its hard to stay on a very strict diet especially at work. I've been taking nexium a little over 2 months for reflux, and have discovered a miracle vitamin called GBPLUS!!! for ibs!!! this is why I've joined healingwell.. to tell everyone with ibs and reflux about this wonderful vitamin. I was ready to go to the hospital because I couldn't keep any food down and was starting to vomit from acid and had lost 7 pounds in one week! I also have degenerative disc disease and oste so my back doctor actually put me on the vitamin. He explained that the gallbladder stores bile that the liver pulls from to digest our food. When your gallbladder is removed they leave the tube and sometimes the liver can't get enough bile.. soo he said I needed bile and low and behold he was sooooo right!!!  the minute I put one of these in my mouth I could feel the acid being obsorbed(i need spelling lessons!! lol ) I've been taking the gbplus about 2 months and have gained 8 pounds, but this past friday I had a bad ibs and reflux day.. I had mac donalds twice, taco bell once and spices all week along with coffee... i was sooo bad and i paid for it dearly.. for 2 to 3 hours at work I went to the bathroom along with chills and sweats and stomach spasms. Today is sunday and I'm still not well from friday. It hurt real bad to take a deep breath last night and still today but not as bad. I've doubled up on the gbplus and have taken a few gas x strips. I think I had sooo much acid to come up my throat that it burnt it and maybe flowed into my lungs.. I've heard of severe gurd getting into the lungs and that is dangerous.

I will close for now.. I hope anyone who has reflux or ibs or both try this vitamin.. it soo far has been a life saver for me!   smilewinkgrin

WOW.. you all could be my twin... :) I'm so glad I found this forum. I've had digestive troubles all my life... gallbladder out Mar. 2005... now I have stenosis in my throat just above my vocal chords... just saw a doc at Univ of WA in Seattle last week.. need to schedule surgery to open up my airway.. guess it involves cutting and lasering and dilating... could possibly be trached.. :( :( :( doc said 95% chance then if I AM trached.. there is a 50% chance it could be permanent.. :( I'm REALLY stressed... don't know what to do... but can't go on with this shortness of breath... this all started at the beginning of the year.... they are suspecting this is caused from GERD.. been on Nexium since the gb came out... doesn't seem to be working.. Seattle doc wrote a scrip for Prilosec.. gonna try that! also for Prednisone to 'cool off' my throat.. the area that is narrowing is all inflamed. Surgery will prob be in about a month.. or after the first of the year. I've had 3 endoscopies since 1996... 2 colonoscopies... and numerous other tests... but no other GI studies... I guess that is NEXT!

Hi gbplus..where do you get your vitamins?  Is this something you are selling or can you get it at a health shop?  Hope you start feeling better soon.  I am having my own issues this weekend.  High bp, but probably due to stress in my life.

Hi Carolyn. I was interested in your current condition. Has there been any other tests done to find out what's going on with your throat? Also, have you ever smoked cigarettes? I am kind of relieved I found someone who had similar symptoms as me. Maybe we could update the findings of our condition to help each other out. My throat and esophagus have been bothering me since March. When I inhale deeply, there is a soreness in my chest. I have dull pains on either side of my Adam's apple and tonsil area. It started on the left side first though. I have had an ultrasound, x-ray and ct scan of my neck and the doctor's claim they didn't see anything wrong except sinusitis which I was treated for. I still have been having symptoms after completing the antibiotic for the sinus infection. There was nothing wrong with my thyroid. However, the ENT did state that my esophagus was really raw. This experience scared me so much so that I quit smoking cigarettes and quit drinking wine. These two things I feel are directly related to my problem. Also, I had my gall bladder removed and a stomach hernia repaired in 2008.

My neck pain has been gone for the past couple months.  I never went to the ent, but I am thinking that it had to do with my gerd.  I took nexium and prilosec for awhile and I think that may be what healed it.  I never smoked, but I do drink some wine.  I hope that it never returns because it was rather debilitating.  Your chest pain sounds like typical acid reflux.  You said that you had your hiatal hernia repaired?  How did that go? Was it an easy surgery?  I have a rather large one that was discovered in Feb.  Right now I don't need to decide to have the surgery but I am interested in learning more about it.  Hope that your discomfort is gone very soon.  Give yourself some time to heal.  Stay strong!

Hi Carolyn,

I just talked with my older sister today and she said the same thing you said when I described my pain. She told me she takes prilosec for her gerd/heartburn. I wanted to find a supplement to heal my esophagus, not just treat it. She said the purple pill (Nexium) is suppose to heal and control heartburn. The bile in my stomach could have something to do with the gerd since I no longer have a gall bladder to hold my bile. My sister had hers removed before me. I am a big eater and I know I need to cut down and choose foods that aren't so spicy. I had been told to do this after my gall bladder removal but never complied.

The hernia surgery wasn't so bad, however, no surgery should be taken lightly. I had to roll out of bed from my side for a couple of weeks because it hurt to sit up and strain my stomach muscle (going to the bathroom). Ever since the surgery there has been a lump on my stomach near where the hernia was. I think it's scar tissue and the doctor said it was normal. I didn't have my hernia patched though, it was sewn because I noticed it before it got too big. Hope this helps.

Regarding Nexium, it addresses the healing by inhibiting stomach acid from producing too much. Therefore it reduces the reflux which is what causes the esophagael irritation. Thus allowing the irritation to heal over time. It doesn't cure the disease unfortunately. Dont eat late at night, like after 8. Elevate your mattress and/or pillows so acid has to flow "uphill". If you take a ppi and then stop after a few months the acid may come back worse for a while. Hopefully you wont have to take it indefinitely. Personally, i dont want to have to rely on any drug indefinitely so there are alternatives that I considered. DHL or licorice root can be taken for stomach issues. Now that your hernia is fixed you may not need too much drug intervention. I hope that for you. I am not at the point of surgery but at least I know that there are those options. I just hope and pray that the "pain in the neck" doesn't return. Best wishes for a great recovery and a healthy life.

Nexium helped me for several years, but now I've developed polyps in my stomach which is a rare side effect of Nexium.
