I'm just wondering how long all the other people here have been on meds for reflux?

I have been on them since age 23, so it's been 23 years and I'm on Nexium now that doesn't seem to working any more as well as omeprazole and gaviscon break through formula. They don't know what to do with me any more. Barb

I've been taking them for 5 of the last 6 years. I did get a year break right after my Nissen Fundo. surgery. Right now I'm on Prevacid solutabs twice a day. I have taken Prilosec and Nexium in the past.

I had the Nissan and was off meds for one year until the heartburn started again. Nothing other than the Nexium helps at all and now it seems that isn't doing so great either for me. I think a person become immune to meds once they take them for so long. At least it seems like that in my case. Barb

SO it sounds like Nissen doesn't work then? My GI doc in MI does this new procedure but I can't remember it now. I wanted to do it but I was wiating so long to get the bravo test and then DH got laid off and lost his insurance so now it's been put on hold. Also we moved to Kentucky so that is just too far for me to go there now. I'm calling his office tomorrow and ask about that procedure and see if there's one who does it around our area.
There is also a great GI dr in Ohio that does this thing called "Stretta", it's also for GERD. I went to go see him.

I was able to get off Prilosec for 2 yrs but lately I've been on Zantac so I'm starting to think about this issue again.

My GI doc said that only a small percentage of people that have the Nissan have permanent or long term relief. I am having the bravo done on the 25th of February. They want to see how much acid is coming up and how often. Before I had my surgery I had the old method done 2x where they put a tube up your nose and down your throat. That was not fun. I was told it will feel like something is stuck in your esophagus for 3 days until the probe breaks loose and passes through. Barb

That is insane! Ok I remembered the procedure, it's called Plicator. I hope your bravo test goes well.

HI i have assumably been suggested i have LPRi have had losec for the past 9 months 2x 40mg every 24 hours.i was considering the nissen but it seems like even the doc had said it isnt recommended.i have now become immune to losec so i have been put onto prevacid.considering 10 months ago i was close to entering the underranks of the pros , in the MTB and road riding.im hardly fit enough to run up the road. any one with experience on any other proceedures and there success?

It's been around 15 years for me. I don't understand why anyone would want to stop taking Nexium. Is it the cost?

Read the above post about Barb. For me I took Nexium 2 yrs ago, then switched to Prilosec. I lost hair, lost weight, brittle nails, stomach pain everyday after eating, dizziness, nausea. I also became very anemic. Need I say more?

Hmmm I have the bittle nails and hair loss. Never thought it was from the Nexium but maybe it is. I could have used the weight loss though, but I wouldn't have wanted the pain and nausea. I've lost weight in the past like that (due to illness) and it's not pleasant. My doctor gave me sucralfate today to take along with the Nexium and he switched me from prilosec to pepcid as it works different from the Nexium and prilosec. He couldn't understand why my GI Doc had me on 2 meds that were virtually the same and worked the same. He said it is better to attack the problem from 2 different angles instead of using meds that work in the same way. Hope it works so I can back off to one Nexium a day again so I don't become a complete idiot. Every one around me is already noticing the effects on my memory after just 2 days of the higher dose. I have been on the maximum dose (2 x 20 mg tabs daily) of rabeprazole sodium (pariet) for 2.5 years and it controls my GERD very well. No significant side effects thanks goodness.

Hello everyone :)

I have been on PPI's for almost a year and a half. I tried several: aciphex, nexium, protonix, and for the last year or so I have been on prilosec. After reading about the side effects (prilosec specifically) I have been attempting to wean myself off it under doctor supervision. I have also been carefully watching my diet. I don't know if I will be successful but I am going to give it a try. Have a nice evening.

I'm watching my diet too and it doesn't seem to be helping at all. I quit taking my Nexuim 2x a day today because I couldn't handle the memory loss problems. It started to affect my job today and I can't afford to lose that. Besides it didn't seem to be helping any way so it wasn't worth the side effects. Well I am off to try to sleep sitting up in my chair for the 3rd night in a row now. Barb

i've been taking prevacid for the past 6 years. i think that i've become used to it, and that it doesn't really work anymore.
im not sure if prevacid has the same side effects as nexium, but i've gotten many polyps in the stomach from the prevacid. luckily, so far, they have not been cancerous

I've been on all the meds including prevacid. I had colon polyps 3 years ago and one was precancerous but that could have been from my 12 years of very active UC. My doc has been down my throat many times so I'm sure he would have found any in my stomach. He's doing a EGD and bravo in Feburary to see why there is so much acid reflux even though I am on meds and had the Nissan wrap. He tells me every time that the wrap is in place. Too bad it's not doing what it is supposed to do. Barb

I've been on and off them for about 2 and a half years. I was taking Pariet 3 x a day (I'm in the UK) but now after the nissen I take lansoprozole 1 x a day.

Roughly 4 years. I'm on Zegerid-oral suspension and for the  most part it does its job. Side effects are minimal.  For me diet plays a huge role. Anything spicy is not nicey.

I was on PPIs on and off for 6 months. I have finally been off for almost 4 months now. It's tough, really tough but I'm feeling better already. Good luck to everyone else attempting it, and make sure to stay in touch with the doctor! I stopped on my own and let me tell you, that is the worst way and hardest way to do it!! Good luck!

I haven't heard of any of those that you 3 have been on. I can't seem to go with out the stomach meds at all. At present time I am taking Nexium 1x a day. Pepcid 2x a day, sucralfate 2x a day and gaviscon and I still have heart burn at night even sleeping sitting up in my chair. Maybe the doc can try some of these other meds on me. Barb

Rabeprazole =

ACIPHEX, also used for the short-term (4 to 8 weeks) treatment in the healing and symptom relief of damaging (erosive) acid reflux disease (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and to maintain healing of damage (erosions) and relief of heartburn symptoms that happen with acid reflux disease.

Prevacid (Lansoprazole), PREVACID is indicated for the treatment of heartburn and other symptoms associated with GERD.

Zegerid = Omeprazole. Zegerid is used to treat ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD or heartburn), and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid production. Reference: PDR Pocket Guide, 7th Edition.
