My first time here, but hours of searching led me to you. Very interesting. However I am unsure if I have linked my condition.  I had a bad case of acid reflux causing severe burning on my esophagus one night about 3 weeks ago. I do have a hiatus hernia and take omeprazole 20mg. At the time I was disgnosed with the hernia the anaesthesiologist said to me, you do have loads of gunk in your esophagus, treat your hernia and I bet your asthma gets better.  Anyway about same time I got a head cold.  Green phlegm started so a suspected chest infection and antibiotics given for 10 days., still green phlegm, so prednisone taken for week.  But still have green phlegm. My lungs felt okay whole time and oxygen levels good. No post nasal drip. The yucky taste remains in my throat and my feeling is that it is from an infection in my esophagus.  i cough it up, very sticky, at least 3 times a day.  Is this possible?  Should I go back to my doctor?

I have had severe lung problems for years, and my doctors (asthma/family) have pushed me to have the Nissen Fundoplication surgery. I also had a hiatal hernia, which I suspect pretty much all GERD sufferers do.

Anyway, keeping in mind that I had an asthma-induced lung infection before surgery, that continued after surgery, then caught the flu, I can't say I've been lung problem free since my surgery on 2/27, but I can tell you that the overall health of my lungs has improved markedly. I'm still coughing up green gunk, due to the fact that my asthma is not all GERD related, and my lungs overreact to anything that accosts them.

However, I can assure you that yes, GERD can cause lung inflamation, bronchial constriction, mucous production, and secondary infection.

If you are still coughing up green phlem, you should go in to see your doctor, to let him/her determine whether you might need an antibiotic.

Cheers Denise for your reply,  woke up this morning

(I live in New Zealand) and was keen to see if any responses. I have not heard of the Nissen operation, but did see it is on lots of topics here so will go check that out.  Will go phone doctor now to see what I can do.  And of course try and lose a stone this weekend. joke, but I do think that may help loads with the hernia too. Oh and go and order some Maca root for the menopause, as not quite sure if I have a fever or the hot flashes now.

I can only emphasize the fact that my asthma and allergy doctors pushed me for years to have the surgery, because they couldn't clear up my lungs with constant acid refluxing up and irritating them.

If you look on the topic page, and go back two or three pages, you can see my experiences with the surgery. If you look around the internet, you'll find lots of hysterical posts, where people blame every possible thing on their surgery. Of course with an unskilled surgeon, it can be bad. In the right hands, it can be a tremendous help.

I hope your doctor can help you find an answer to your problem. I had constant asthma for years. Of course after flu, I've got lung problems again (I can't catch a break), but I'm looking to eventually having clear lungs. They're definitely better than they were.

Hey, I get my share of hot flashes. I never heard of Maca root! I'll have to look some up and give it a try.
