Well I had a galbladder attack that lasted 3 months so I've got you beat there. I was so sick I just wanted God to let me die. The worse part was not knowing what was wrong and being so sick. I'm with you though I so glad to get rid of it. The reason I was asking about it was because someone was telling me that taking the fishoil and flax oil with out a galbladder to digest the fats can cause heart burn. My stomach is really messed up tonight. I ate so much crap today including chocolate this morning. I hope I can get some sleep as I am exhausted. I had so much fun today though with my sisters and their families. They all stayed for a camp fire after dinner which usually does not happen. I think I over did it again today though as I am having those sharp pains again by my navel. It is probably still irritated from all the stuff I did on Thursday and Friday at work. I'll put some heat on it tonight when i go to bed. That always seems to help. It is easy to over do when you are feeling better so make sure you watch that. I'm glad your doing better though. It's so much better to have your own room too. Maybe you'll be able to get some more rest that way too. I'll keep praying that you continue to get better. Barb

Hi Denise, do you take advair. I am on the 250/50 but have been on the higher dose of it. It did help me last fall to be on the higher dose. I seem to do real well with the advair unless I get sick or allergies get real bad or my stomach gets bad. I have certain spots where my skin is really thin and can easily tear. I never thought of that coming from steroids. I am regretting the stuff I ate today all ready. I don't think it will be a very good night for sleeping with the way it feels already. I think I better take some gas x and gaviscon before I even lay down. Well better go do that and get ready for bed. Have a good night. Barb

I was feeling pretty well today. My stomach was really good until the dreaded doctor "Push and Poke" at it. I really like it when you about jump an the ceiling from the pain they just caused and they ask if that hurt.
Yesterday's ct showed the hole is healing slowly, but isn't leaking right now. It has a bubble forming over the hole which is good, but it is still easy to break open. I actually got four straight hours of sleep last night. I didn't get woke up until 4am and I last looked at the clock at 12am.
I only saw one of the residents today and he said everything is looking good. I actually wasn't as sore when he pushed on my belly this time. It got really sore about an hour later though. I am hoping I can get out of here by Friday. Probably won't happen though.
Last night before my surgeon left he sat down beside my bed and we had a good talk about everything that has happened since Thursday when I came back. He was trying to make me understand how sick I was. He told me I am really looking good now and my vitals are all staying good now. I hadn't noticed my heart rate was so high until he told me. It was always around 120 something. Now it's around 70 - 80.
I took a shower and went for a 3 hallway walk right after. That was exhausting! I can't believe how low my energy is.

I am sorry to hear you have a hard time too. Hope you will get better soon. I have difficulty swallowing but it is lot like there is any pain. Sometimes I have throat burn, mostly after wine or alcohol so I have stay away from that in a long time now. The symptoms which I have had in about 6 years now are:
Continual throat clearing, Chronic throat irritation, Chronic cough, Hoarseness, Excessive phlegm the throat, difficulty swallowing, Constant sensation of something in the throat, Post nasal drainage, Weak voice/Cracking voice, Blockage of the breathing passage.
I have had an endoscope which was negative and am going to have a 24-hour pH testing soon, don’t have a date yet. LPR is difficult to diagnose, the 24-hour pH testing is the gold standard. It has benne a fight with the doctors but about 7 months ago I got the nexium pill and took 80mg daily in 6 months and it help a lot until I got some bad side effects and I will not take another pill, it isn’t good for you long-term. This is why I really hope that the new Linx procedure will be a success.
I actually have some questions regarding the linx to your doctor, I really appreciate the help you are giving, very nice of you, here they are:
1. When somebody have LPR Reflux I know the lower esophagus sphincter doesn’t close as it should and let the acid go into your esophagus but I know that in the persons which have LPR the upper esophagus sphincter doesn’t work neither and it is because of that sphincter that the Acid moves ALL the way up to your throat. So the question is: “if the linx corrects the lower esophagus will it stop the acid from going all the way through your upper esophagus sphincter as well. Is it enough to correct the lower esophagus sphincter, will that stop the Acid moving up and do damage to your throat?
2. In comparison to those with GERD how effective is the Linx procedure for those with Laryngopharyngeal Reflux – LPR?

Bill, it's good to hear you are doing better. I'm glad you are finally getting some sleep. That will help with your healing. It helps to have your own room too. I slept a record 7 hours straight last night which felt so good. I normaly wake up 2 hours after laying down and then once more during the night so it feels really good when I sleep that long. I hope every thing continues to go well for you. I got good news today from my dental insurance. They are going to pay for all, but $105 of the mouth piece for my night grinding. I go see him tomorrow to get it fitted. He still has to figure out why my teeth hurt so bad on the one side. I'm hoping that this takes care of that problem as I am as sick of seeing the dentist as I am of seeing doctors. Take care and keep getting lots of rest Bill.

Bea, I got my barium swallow done today. The doctor told me briefly that she didn't see any difficulty swallow or reflux on her monitor.

Bea, I have a question regarding to surgery. Now, I have very sour mouth, but when I drink water, I feel more soure come up with acid taste. Bea, before surgery, do you get this soure taste come up even more when you drink water? I have very soure or bitter taste, but when I drink water, it come up even more.  I am very scare of surgery - I am a big chicken :')

Bea, do you get any gas or bloated or throw-up after surgery?

Hey marie,

 alittle gas i mite say no vomiting just a bout of bein nausea 2to3 times. I was the biggest chicken when it came to surgery but Marie i am a new woman since surgery.No SOUR TASTE.Ye i had sour taste with every thing including  water .Now though I am a new woman.

I am still camped out at the hospital. I have tried 2 more times to get clear liquids down with no success. I am now taking IV protonix. I am scheduled to have an endoscopy Thursday. They are thinking the hole is healed , but I may have gastritis or an ulcer from the holes not healing inside.
I hope to get home Friday. After 2 plus weeks here I am very ready to get home. I haven't eaten anything solid since the 17th.

Well my last CT scan shows the air and fluid around my stomach is almost gone, I am back to clear liquids again. My surgeon wants me to stay a couple more days just in case. He said I will still have some pain for quite a while as it finishes healing, but it's no longer leaking. Almost 3 weeks here is quite enough for me. I am not sure if I will get to go home Sunday or Monday. Either way there is light at the end of the tunnel now.

this is Marie.

Evidently, I went in for barium swallow only, but the dr. need to talk to me briefly that day -caught me by suprise.  I wasn't prepare with my list of question.

The dr. told me that I didn't qualify for Linx cause I hve barrett.

I was num and scare and shock; I just couldn't think that day.  

Sorry -I did not get the chance to ask.

I will see him again and this time I will have my question list.

Oh- right now, I am waiting for one more test 24HR (Upper and lower). The dr at USC say I need this test and see if the Nissan benefit me. I am crossing my finger. I am still waiting for my insurance...
As of now, I am off the med for about 2 weeks, I have burning stomach - and throat - it is so uncomfortable. Bea, do you have this burning when you were off the med when you have the test?

Denise and Bea, normally, after surgery, do we need to continue take any antiacid med - like PPI, etc?

I would bet from what you have said that you would benefit from the Nissen surgery. As far as PPIs after the surgery. My first one I was on them for 1 month just to use help with healing. This time I wasn't on them until about 2 weeks ago and again it is just to help things finish healing. I don't have any symptoms it is just precautionary. My doctor wanted to keep me on protonix for a month, but of course out of the hospital my insurance wants me to use aciphex. I can't tell a difference, so I guess it doesn't matter.
I got an urge for french fries last night and did manage to get down about half of a medium fry. Of course I used a ton of ketchup. Wow, they were good. And yes I paid for it later, but it was worth it!

 The last PPI . I swallowed was the night b4 my surgery. I have since been PPI free. Yay!!!!! Never took it again.

Hi Marie,
I'm a bit of a different case. After surgery I was on antibiotics, and later prednosone for a lung infection, then the flu. I have an EXTREMELY reactive stomach, so my family doc kept me on Protonix to calm the acid as my wrap healed.

I have continued the Protonix for that reason, and now am in the process of tapering that. My GI doc suggested taking one every other day for about a month, then quitting. So far so good. (I'm not taking them for reflux--as Bill said--just to ensure that my stomach isn't challenged with acid as it heals.)

My GI doc thinks I have a reactive stomach, rather than chronic gastritis. He doesn't think that I'll have trouble after I quit the Protonix. If I do, he said he'd revise his diagnosis and lean towards gastritis as the cause. Hopefully it won't cause problems, because I'd love to be off PPI's altogether.

I presume I may go on Protonix occasionally, when I'm taking meds that are more challenging to the stomach (antibiotics, prednosone, etc.).

I am so glad I had the surgery...what a difference it has made in the health of my lungs. The bonus--GERD free as well! When I go visiting, I don't have to bring my wedge and pillow pile to raise my head up to nearly sitting. I can actually sleep laying down! When I eat a big meal, I don't start coughing and wheezing.
Wish I had done it sooner.
Just be sure you choose your surgeon very carefully. It's the most important thing you can do!

Denise, so in this case - it is very important to find a very qualify doctor to do this type of surgery to minimize the side affect down the road. Denise, do you know what is the number that the surgeon need to do in order to determine a good nissan surgeon?
