Has anyone had a tear after a nissen?

Brief history

First nissen without mesh- 2006. Helped- I could sleep and constant reflux was gone.

Did well for 2 years

Wrap opened and had it redone with a mesh 10- 08

Took me 6 months to get on my feet and now

May 2009- sudden pain last sat evening 3 hrs after dragging a crate od dishe sout of a closet- never lifted it.

Waited until Monday May 4 - called GI who spoke to me and said it could just be a tear or the wrap could have opened.

It has only been 7 months! And I have a mesh.I do not get this.

Wait 2 weeks and if it does not clear up; he will see  me and decide next step.

Pain is increasing and it is hard to sleep. Next step is to see PCP for a pill to calm me down.

QUESTIONS:1.  Did anyone have this? Did it go away in two weeks?  Results?

2. I am trying caltrate 600+D for post gallbladder diarhhrea which I cut up to take.(they are huge)  Could that have  caused  this "tear"

Any help appreciated

I did have a problem when I tried to take a 500mg vitamin C tablet (cut up). It got stuck, and my wrap was really irritated for a few days. It definitely set me back. Now I crush them between two spoons, and put them in yogurt. Also, I went to the health food store and bought liquid calcium with vitamin D. That goes down really easy.
I don't know if it could cause your sensations, but if it got stuck in your wrap, it could probably have irritated it, and esophageal and wrap irritations can mimic lots of things.

I cannot say for sure if I had a tear from straining or eating something that got stuck, but I have had it torn on purpose. Well, the LES was due to my dysphagia. They dilated it a lot to try and stretch the wrap and told me they had torn the muscle on purpose. That took about 4 weeks to calm down. It's not exactly the same though. I had my first Nissen done 6/06 and may have it redone 5/18/09. I haven't heard of re doing it with mesh before. Wold you mind filling me in on that a little? Also, I use Colestid 1G control the after gallbladder diarrhea. It is a bit large, but very smooth. I have also used Questran and it is a powder and makes it much easier to get down.

Thank you for your responses. This gives me hope that it may be a passing thing. I never had any of these issues with first nissen- was back to work in 3 weeks.

I will try smashing the caltrate- it has been a life saver with post gallbladder diarhhrea.Glad to see it comes in liquid.  I will also look into what Bill suggested.

Bill- the mesh info is available on www.mayoclinic.com. Go to the site and read through to end of the article.


You can also google How to do nissen fundiplication with mesh. There are lots of sites- look for the simple explanations because some are written for MD's.


Also my Md gave me a booklet explaining how it was done laparoscipally.That was the best booklet- written for the lay person.

The surgeons have developed a newer mesh lately and it works better, my surgeon said. That is what he used on me.

Hi Biagina,
My surgeon considered mesh with my Nissen...I had been on prednosone, and my tissue was very fragile. In the end he did extra sutures to strengthen it, because as he said, "Mesh can sometimes cause other problems". No idea what that means, but it shows it is a common practice.

Try not to worry. When you can't look down and see what's going on for yourself, the tendency is to think the worst. That won't do you a bit of good, will it? Stay positive. It can only help.

The liquid calcium that I take is:
Lifetime Liquid Calcium Magnesium Citrate--Natural Orange Vanilla Flavor. It has Vitamin D in it.
I take one and a half tablespoons in the morning, and a tablespoon in the evening with dinner. It is 600mg a tablespoon.
There's no need to mix it with anything. It doesn't taste bad at all. It's not cheap, though. 16oz. is about 9 dollars. Worth it, though.

Thanks for the info and link. I feel like I have never had this surgery before or something. I have been scanning the net for anything new about this. Strange.
I only use the Colestid about 2 or 3 times a week now. I am not sure if it's because I am having a hard time eating normal or my body is finally getting used to the extra bile. It has been almost 4 years since that was removed. I can feel it coming on and take one of them and sometimes add an Imodium and all is well for a few days. What a relief that has been.
Anyhow, I hope he wrap is just irritated and will heal on it's own.

I have to tell you the gallbladder gave me more post surgery distress than the Nissen with mesh- It was a matter of eating no fats for the gallbaldder and soft foods for the nissen. Soup and puddings would have been great, but they set off the gallbaldder diarrhrea etc. I finally made a chart to cover meds and foods.

Glad tohear less of diarrhhrea after 4 years- something to look forward to.

Sorry I had them together, but I had pain everywhere with an asypmtomatic gallbladder ; perfect tests etc. that acted up 4 times since I was 30 ( I am 62 now)- and the Md's said- someday it will have to come out- I got three opinions beforeI agreed. And 7 people in my family had to have it out.

I bought the calcium at Nature Tyme--a local health/supplement/food store, but I'll bet you can get it anywhere. I'm sure there are other good brands, too. I just thought you might like to know the type I use. I really needed to get my calcium intake up to protect my bones. PPI's and prednosone/steroids are very hard on bones. There's no way I'm going to be able to get a regular tablet down.
