Hi All!  My name is Kelley.  I'm 25 and living with severe GERD for the last five years.  I've finally set a date for my surgery!  I've never done much blogging (only Myspace) and never participated in a forum, so here goes nothing. 

Just wanted to tell the three of you that you have been a breath of fresh air in my GERD/fundo research.  Like you said almost everything out there is negative/scary.  So it was nice to read about ya'lls journeys.  Also I like that Bea just had her surgery last month.  Most of what I read was from around five years ago and I'm sure things have improved.  My own mom had the open procedure and is adding anxiety to me daily.  I love her but geez she only makes it worse! 

I'm thinking of starting my own thread of my pre- and post-op surgery.  It's so nice that we can all share our expierences and learn from one another's trials.  K, I'm off to read some more.  Have a great day ~Kelley

Welcome. I believe they do way more laproscopic now. Both of mine were. If you have any questions at all please ask.

I'm so glad you've joined us. I do hope you'll start a thread and keep updating your experience. That's a great idea! I tried to document my experience for just the reason you stated--there is so much negative out there! When I was looking for information, it was so hard to find any positive comment from people who had experienced the procedure.

Please be sure to ask questions if you have them. The laproscopic procedure is much easier than the older, open procedure. You'll find the surgery much easier than what your mother experienced with an open procedure.

Don't worry, Kelly. I don't know if you read the posts Bea and I used to write to each other before she had the surgery. She was so scared, and I kept telling her to relax and not to worry. Now she's totally happy she had it done, and found out that I was right--the recovery was much easier than she thought it was going to be.

Hello Ashleigh and welcome; like Denise, I suspect that you're bringing up food and everything else from your esophagus, I've always used the hairball analogy. Try this, and excuse me if the wise women here have already told you this....before eating anything, sip hot fluids...tea, soup, water, it doesn't matter, the warmth will help to relax the spasms in the esophagus and allow the LES to open to accept the food.

It is very possible that you are trying to eat to quickly and to much. Try taking little bits at a time; I liken it to a waltz...step 2, 3, step 2,3, except swallow, 2, 3, swallow 2,3. The peristalsis in your esophagus has been grossly altered by the surgery and it needs time to adjust. This period of healing is going to take you 8 weeks...seriously. For now, though, give it time to swallow completely then take a little (emphasis on little) bit more. See if this doesn't help.

Around week 5 you should be feeling pretty good, maybe earlier. It sounds like you may just be trying to do too much. For example, I had to stay on liquids for the first week and then move from there, even then I had significant problems and a real set back, but I did get better.

Stay with the forum, the people here are wise, wonderful, caring and friendly. We'll see you through, listen to what is going on, cheer you on and whop you upside the head if the situation warrants it (I think we can all agree on that one!!).

I was just going to post what Denise said. I am on her pre op and post op/Her ,Bill,Kitt,Janice gave me encouragement,wisdom and support prior to my surgery.Today they remain my unseen heroes . Be our guest and post post post.You may help another GERD sufferer. So much negativity on the net had me sh**ttin bricks but ,Being here let me know they were only pebbles (LOL).

Hi guys,

 today I had half of breakfast sausage (Brown an serve) a half of pancaked drenched in syrup, 1 egg ,half biscuit, and a cup of choclate milk.

now for lunch I had a fudge pop. omg i am thinking this is too much. I am still nursing the pepsi daily.

I can tell you're having fun getting back into the swing of eating...I'm thinking you might just be a bit of a junk food junkie!  Enjoy!  Amazing progress you've made! 

I'm visiting my sons and have been really busy this weekend.  Not sure how much I'll be able to post.  it's getting really busy at school....deadlines, deadlines, deadlines.  I'm doing a play with my class on June 19th, and YIKES!  We haven't been on stage yet!  Wish me luck!

Hi Guys,

 Denise, what is the play based  on? Its the end of the year for you yay!! Speaking of schools,my daughter Bria's school sent 57 kidshome for flu like symptoms but the school hasnt closed down for a cleaning. I told my daughter , thanx to the NYC bd of ed you have another free day 2moro.I refuse to send her.I cannot get the flu.I would be a statistic!!

A junk food eater? LOL i love icecream,hershey bar with almonds  ,coconut custard pie,and reeses peanut butter cups. Thats about it.Is that too much?LOL I do not like cakes,potato chips etc.Im actually very picky. This eve I had 3 ounces spahettie and a handful of salad with red wine and vinegar and balsamic mixed. IM NUTS , but no heartburn or reflux.

Hi Bea,
No...that's not too much junk food. I just like to give you a hard time. My play is based on the story "Stone Soup". It's called a "rock opera", so is a musical version. It's pretty complex, with two solos, one trio, and even a dance sequence. The chorus sings all the songs. Every child gets to speak lines into the microphone (narrators), and there is quite a lot of action on stage. I'm doing the play with another second grade teacher, but I'm the lead director (I put on my "crazy director hat", and become a crazy woman!).

We have some pretty difficult kids this year, so I'm a little worried. We have cast a student with autism in one of the lead roles (am I crazy? He's high functioning, but it will definitely will be interesting--I like to give the bigger parts to kids who need a lift--not the kids who "have it all".)

I put on a play every year, and students always remember the play as a high point of their elementary years. High school kids come back and tell me they still remember the songs and parts.

Anyway...it's late, and I've got to get some sleep. 5AM comes pretty quickly!

awwwwwwww Denise,

I wanna see it!!! I am an assistant director for 10 group homes serving high/low functioning consumers and high functioning consumers with psych issues. I ben doin this for over 20 yearz. I have some autism, mild retardation, moderate etc ,cerbral palsy, bi polar ,schizoid, etc You get the picture. I wouldnt change it for my life.i love my guys & girls and they love me. The smile is what makes up for the money. My pay sux even after 20something years. I can go elsewhere for 20 30 thousand more but I CANT LEAVE THEIR SMILES and their undying unconditional love for me and its reverse for me lol. I take 6 home every thanksgiving for dinner becuz they r either without family or their family doesnt want to know them. Besides, who will make sure they r being treated right by the staff, if they are getting their correct services from our government etc etc.I know I am replaceable but they arent in my heart!!

What a kind thing to do. I'm sure the friends you bring home for Thanksgiving absolutely love it. I know what you mean about not wanting to leave. I am the only second grade teacher with a Teaching Assistant, so they place all the special ed students in my classroom.

I love working with my autistic student...he has come so far. He always had his head down and his eyes shielded at the beginning of the year. He wouldn't even sing with us. I've worked really hard to bring him along. He's very excited about being "Captain Andy" in the play. Hopefully it works out. I'm pretty confident that he can handle it, or I wouldn't have cast him. We had Grandparent's Day, and sang to our grandparents--he was an enthusiastic participant in front of a pretty big crowd. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

well yesterday I ate "leftover spaghetti" yummy. I really didnt feel like cooking and nothing can be better tasting the next day then spaghetti. I had one big serving spoon and a slice of coconut custard pie.That was it all day. I drank water though to keep hydrated. I really didnt have an appetite.

I am making dinner now becuz at 12noon I will go stay at my daughters house overnight.She is taking her hubby to alantic city for his birthday.They have the prez suite. I said ,I am praying this is th enight my grandson gets conceived and my grandaughter will finally have a sibling." LOL My son in law said "Your nuts, Im done with one" I said oh yeah,you think so, we have a bag of tricks lined up for you" He cracked up. He thinks Im nuts!! Imagine that ? LOL !!

It is storming here in NYC,dark grey clouds along with it. I am going to take my grandbaby Haley to go see Up if the weather lightens up a bit.

Anyway, I will come on later

Good Morning Bea and All,

You are a cooking maniac and  Denise is a Brainiac........my goodness what am I...............??? I love junk food but I am fussy too, Bea,  I only like desserts, burgers, fries, cakes and pie.  I am I said, a junk food junky.  yeah yeah   turn   yeah yeah is there any saving me?  Bea is a cook.............I am going to her house for dinner.   Denise is a director of productions,  I am going to her town for entertainment. Janice is wise and wonderful,  I am going to her house to find the wizard.  turn

So much talent. 

Bea, I am so glad you are doing well and keep it up my friend. 

Yesterday my niece and her daughter from North Dakota surpised me by showing up for a visit.  They are on there way to California via Mn, and Texas.  I am so glad she is taking a vacation after the many months she spent caring for her Mother, my sister.

We did an Applebee's run and I won't tell you what I ate, well maybe I will but my GERD rebelled a bit.............I should know better then to eat ice cream and nachos with chili and cheese together.

Atlantic City, whoooo hooooo I loved it there.  Only been once but the board walk was great.  I hope your daughter and her hubby have a super time.

Well my friend...............you have a wonderful day and know I am thinking of you.

Hi Kitt,
How nice to get a visit from your niece! I'm sure she loves you very much. She has been through a lot (as you have), and it's wonderful that you have each other. I hope you'll be able to maintain a close relationship--even though you're separated by distance. My mom is gone, and we were very close. I have an older cousin who lives about three hours away, and we have grown close via email. She was also close to my mom, so we have that in common.

Hey, you've got to enjoy some no-no foods sometimes. Now that I've had the surgery, I'm enjoying some of the foods that I couldn't eat for many years. It's a real treat.

I'm going to try to get on the forum as much as possible, but things are pretty hectic with the end of school.

Hey Guys,

 Wow kitt that was a surprise huh.Nothing like family. well I ate a landmine yesterday.cookies and cream ice cream extra oreos crumbled up woot hoot. I also ate a half of turkey sandwich on whole wheat toast,an avocado,chicken soup and a drank a pepsi without nursin.Did have a little extra gas but im ok.Im moving on up yay!!!!!!!

I am so glad to hear how well you are doing and how much fun you are having with your treats.

It was a great surprise to see my niece and she is most likely almost to San Antonio, TX by now.

I will be off line starting tonight until the early part of next week due to the carpet installation project so I hope you continue to do well and help hold down the fort here.

Hello my friend and I hope life slows down a bit for you.  It is time for a breather. smhair My end of school chores were easy as a substitute.............none. turn

Yes it was fun to have my niece surprise me and she loves to do that.  I just left myself wide open as she had called about 2 hours before she knocked on the door and you know I forget about those cell phones..............so I assumed she was calling from home.  blush She is a wonderful young woman and I am so glad she is able to take her daughter and go on this great road trip they are on.

I am delighted to hear you have become close to your cousin and 3 hours is not so far away, perhaps you can meet half way for each of you to have some visits.

I will be offline starting sometime this evening and not be back online until the first part of next week due to the carpet installation project so I am hoping you will be around to greet and meet the newbies............

I know you are busy so just a  romp through the forum from time to time would be great.

I know you are wonderful about always responding to the members so this is most likely a moot point to have even brought up..........((((((((((Hugs)))))))))).

I just wanted you to know I did not jump ship, I am afraid of the sharks.  LOL.

PS--Lucky you to have no end of the year responsibilities! Our play is keeping me hopping. There are so many special events that there hasn't been enough time to practice as much as I'd like to. We've got the sets up now, and i just got the microphones today. I've still got to teach them a dance, and how to line up for the finale. Wish me luck! I guess the proper greeting is "break a leg"!

Sorry I'm not as active on the forum, but I'm struggling with work at school. The play is coming pretty well, and Captain Andy is so cute. I just hope he doesn't freeze and check out when he sees the crowd. Yikes! That will be challenging. Can't go there. I think he'll do ok.

There's one class that he won't go near--the little girl he had a crush on in first grade is in the class. He is "scared" of them...covers his eyes, and keeps his head down. I talked to their teacher, and asked that she seat her class on the other side of the cafeteria (that's where the stage is), and not right in front. It wouldn't be good to have them right in front of him! Wish us luck!

Right now it's pretty scary, because there's till a lot to introduce--I haven't taught the dance at the end, and we need to work out a lot of the movements. It's a very complex play with lots of acting involved. A challenge with second graders! Yesterday I got the stage sets ready, so we're good there. There's a lot to think of!

Anyway...hope you're feeling well! Gotta go get ready for school.

Hi Guys,

Its been a few days since I posted what I ate so here goes. On friday my hubby took me to applebees. I had 2 mozarella sticks with extra sauce and an oriental grilled chick salad. I only had 4 spoons of the salad. I had that pepsi but only a quarter cup. I came home and eventually drank a can

Saturday I ate 1 breakfast sausage with one egg on 1 Arnold brick oven thin slice bread. Later on I ate the salad and had a bubba burger oh with a pepsi.

Yesterday I made sausage ,peppers and onions, spaghetti and garlic bread. I only ate one sausage actually i sliced it down the midd and ate the one half on the arnold bread. CAUTION: I tried to eat an entermanns chocolate donut, I took a sip of the pepsi and I swear it was like grease that turned hard from cold water. It clogged my throat and scared me to freaken death,I thought I was gonna have a seizure thankfully it was only stars!!!!!!!!!! LOL

so 2day i took it east. I ate mashed potatoes a few string beans and a small piece of cutlet. 1 pepsi. I wont eat again -Oh and since I went thru that episode of chokin I treated myself to hershey with almonds yummm. I havent had a 3 to 5 a day meal appetite so I only ate once. thats all folks
