My reflux was controlled for 5 years with Prilosec, and experienced no problems for that period of time. However, suddenly I was being awakend in the middle of the night choking on bile, with it sometimes going into my lungs. I had a endoscopy where my doctor refered me to one of the best fundoplication surgeons around. He explained that the problem was that the Priloces neutralized the acid, leaving nothing but bile in my stomach. Now that that was starting to come up, I had a good likelihood of developing esophagal cancer in my 50's (I'm 47). He suggested the surgery. I was also told I would not be able to burp or throw up, both of which I can still do after the surgury.
My post-op went normal, and soon I was beginning to eat small amounts of solid foods. The problem is after 3 weeks my body has become less and less tolerable to solids, until I am on a strictly liquid diet. I have gone from 210 lbs to 180, and this is entirely unacceptable to me. I would rather deal with the reflux than the constant discomfort I am now experiencing.
I have a follow-up in a few days, and if he tells me this is normal in some patients and to just give it time, I will follow his advise. But I am also going to make him commit to a date that if it hasn't corrected itself that he reverse it.
