If your worried about the Nissen ask about the EsophyX procedure. It's ideal if your HH isn't too big.

dearest r1opez75, I am 25 years old:( I suffer severe gerd. i was put in a ct scan machine, i drank barium, they shook me up, and saw the barium go right up my esophagus. they concluded a defective sphincter. the pain is unbearable. i am missing out on my life. i cannot eat like normal people do. i cannot do sports. i cannot do anything. i am in pain. the nexium- ppi meds are worsening my metabolism, and nutritional absorption. i have developed BEAUS lines, an indication of some nutritional problem...how can I be normal when my stomach is blocking all the acids...my reflux hurts me alot...i cry my nights to sleep...i wish to die sometimes...

please keep us posted with your surgery update....please...so we know how this has helped you...so we know if we should also take a step and go for it, than living the rest of my - youth life- sufffering a burned esophagus, and sooner or later ...barrets

Thankyou so much...you're all so wonderful. Thankyou Mary , Thankyou Griff...I will be considering surgery and looking for a good doc, doing my research, and so on...Ill be having the barium swallow test again...first time, they put me in the ct scan and i swallowed the barium and it showed all of it go back to my esophagus when they shook me; now, ill be going for it a second time to see if the defective sphincter will let the barium again up my esophagus....I am sure it will:(

Jules, there is hope. You dont have to live the rest of your life this way. I know what it feels like to wish death before thinking of spending the rest of your life with that miserable pain. If it werent for my wife I would have taken my own life, due to mental issues caused by years of suffering from this and having doctors misdiagnosing me, telling me it was my heart rolleyes .  You have the rest of your life to look forward to so getting the surgery is the only option.

Look for a doctor who will get you the help you need. Sometimes we forget that doctors work for us!! We tell then what we feel and some times we have to tell them what we need done from reading other peoples experiences. Ask to have a manometry test. It isnt the most comfortable thing to go through but I was abale to go to the best surgeon in my area with the results of my manometry test and he had no choice but to do the surgery with what he saw. There is no way a human can live with no lower sphincter pressure to hold you food/acid down. No ethical surgeon will turn you away, as long as he has the experience to do the surgery and the necessary test information. If not move on to the next. But there is no way you should have to live your life that way when there is a surgery to remedy your problem!!! Life is too good to give up so keep pushing forward.

In sorry for not replying sooner, but I have been trying to recover from self caused pain. I'm back on a liquid diet. I felt great on Wend. and had a bit of fish for dinner that nite. Well, I was chewing well and swallowing little by little. I guess it was bunching up at the wrap and when I took 2 drinks of water if felt like I swallowed a baseball and with in a few hours I was in pain, swelling and palps again skull . I didnt hurt any thing permenatly though as i dont have phlem in my throat or any other GERD symptoms. It seems that my doctor did a great job tying off the stiches but I wont be putting his work to the test again nono   It sucks being back on liquids because I'm hungry every 30 minutes but at this point I have no choice. I need to let my body heal. Taking the Vicotin, or being dependant on it, for so long did some damage to my esophogus since the sores were barely starting to heal again.

But today I felt good enough to take a trip to Costco for dog food and other suplys.

Jules, again, dont give up. There is defenitly some one out there that can help. Dont loose faith. The good thing is that you have us to share our experiences with you so you can ask the rite questions. Defenitly ask for your test results, of every test you have done, so that you can take them to any surgeon of your choice untill you find one that will help. And I would defenitly ask for the Manometry test. That was the hardest form of evidence that my surgeon needed to schedule me for surgery. He took one look at the results and knew what he had to do.

Rafael, after surgery for the first week, do you experience some reflux?

Like throat irration - phlem, small burn, etc?

I can burp very easy when I woke up from the surgery.

Today is my 4 day out of nissen surgery. I wasn't able to do number 2 until day 3.

The thing is I am still getting some irratation from my throat and a small degree of burn.

I can swallow very easy - I wonder if my wrap is tighten enough.

I am going to follow up with my dr in 1 or 2 weeks.

Right after the surgery I felt a burning feeling, and still do, like I'm breating really cold air. Some times I think it may be a bit of acid leaking through but I have no other symptoms and the burning feels different than when I would get reflux. That burning kind of came in waves as the acid came up and then down. Like it was splashing. I took some Prolisec for 2 weeks and no sings of improvement so I'm guessing that I'm still healing because my esophogus was severly eroded and inflamed prior to surgery.

My good progress came to a halt this morning at 4:30 when my neighbor knocked on my door. I jumped out of bed so fast I was probably still a sleep! The inflimation and palpitations started with in a few minutes. He said he came out of his house and found some one going through my truck. He said the guy was huge when he saw my neighbor he acted like he lived here, at my house, and headed towards my front door and lit a cigarett......I hate cigaretts!! My neighbor took out his cell phone and the guy took off and jumped in to a waiting car. He didnt get any thing since my truck has been sitting, for the most part, of the 7 months I have been on disability. I took all my tools out personal belongings out of it as soon as I stopped working. We live in, what I though was, a safe community 50 miles east of Los Angeles on a culdesac and have come to find out that they arent as safe as I thought before because and it seems like people come here to commit mostly robberies because its so quiet. At nite is is verry quiet and the absense of passing cars make it ideal for crimes, I guess. There have been a few other people who have had their cars broken in to. I guess these guys go from car to car pulling on the door handles to see which one is open. At least they dont break windows. I made the mistake of not locking it after I took out a tire pressure guage yesterday.

It makes me very angry at my condition because being an Electrician I had plas to install state of the art survalience cameras, lights, and security system but I have been unable to perform any work sine I had to stop working a few weeks after purchasing this house in April of this year. So asides from what I want to do I have projects that need to be finished. It frustrates me so much because I have allways been the kind of person to consistantly be woking on my house. Even if it were just gardening or cleaning the pool......this sucks.

Oh, that's a frighting experience! I'm glad your neighbor saw that man.
I hope you get no more frights or doctors poking at you until you're fully healed.

It was the knock at the door that scared me because he rang the door bell and knockd on the door really hard which ecoed relly loud through the house.

I used to be the one to defend my property at any cost. Whe we lived in Texas I had a permit to carry a fiire arm and did so. I have since sold my guns and now think about being here to see my children grow up, at any cost. Unless my family is in danger I have learned to just let things be.

Wow - that is pretty scaring thing to hear. Make sure you report the incident to the police so they can pantrol your area more with more police men.

Gee - that is scary.

I set up a pair of computer survalience cameras hook into a computer server. It was mouted at my front yard, and this was done long long time ago.

We used it for a long time. It is pretty cool - you can see the blue light from the camera angle and aim right at our front yard. Since then, we never use it. 

Our neighbor notice the camera.  Some of our neighbor came and ask can the camera see their yard too! No Kidding  - *Laff*

It was quite small and mounted right at the top of the outside becony.

It was consuming too much electrice and also it was quiet around our area.

Knock on wood and hope it will stay that way.

Some day I may setup my home with solar panel and save tone of money so that I can setup many servers - and have survalience cameras in real time and report to my phone in real time. I am a system analyst. I always want to setup a old computer to water my front yard - but never get to it. I used to setup so many systems for my client to do so many things in their home - but never setup anything for my own use!

Now, I am facing this disease. Don!

Rafael, hopefully some day - we will get back to the thing we love to do. :)

Thank much for your update. I just begin to take prilosec this morning since I am clearning my throat and getting this sour taste. I wonder if it is still too early in the game.

I will make an appointment with my dr soon.

hoping everyone is doing good... one more day of work before im out on disability 2 weeks early before my surgery... today is a horrible day but im patient and trying to at least eat a little.. sigh...
does theprilosec help marie or raf? my buddy who had the nissan done was told it can take up to 6 plus weeks for everything to start unswelling and start healing back up.'

Griff, where are you having your surgery?
I live in Los Angeles, California. I had mine in USC.

You know - as for surgery - it happen so fast that I don't even remember what happen.
I remembered they push me over to another bed and put something over my face for breathing and *BooM* the next thing, one of the nurse pushing me and change my pillow. I was out of the drowzzy stage -& say - hey when is the surgery - hey what happen. ! They say I did fine and that I was snoring so loud *Laff*
The dr. came and say I did great! - wow - that sound like two second thing or what ...

He also recommand me to do a lot of walking in the hospital so that the gas will get out of my body. I woke up next morning in the hospital and walk 30 laps. I didn't have any pain because the morphine still in my body. I walked and walked and walked -like Forest Gum - Run Forest run *Laff*
I didn't notice any gas in my body, except I couldn't delivery the number 2 gas at the time. It took me day 3 for me to go do number 2.

I had my surgery on 9/9/09 - today is my 4 day out of surgery. My symptom - I had really bad burn throat when ever I drink water or eat - within a minute the burn will start. After surgery, my burn is very very lite. Knock on wood that it will heal over time.
I still get irritation throat - like phlem or something. I hoping that over time, it will be gone.   I took 1 prilosec today and didn't notice anything. The dr note indicate to take it for a while. I will make an appointment with the dr soon....


Hey - Griff, does your buddy say that the reflux symptom will completely go away first thing after surgery or does it take some time for it to slowly go away....
I hoping it take time. Cause right now, my burn is seem to be very lite. Knock on wood that it will stay away all together in time.

griff the prilosec was the only PPI that worked for me. I was on it twice a day, in th emorning and at nite. I was taking the prescription one because its cheaper and I noticed that the OTC didnt last as long. The only down side was that I wasnt digesting my food rite and I would have to eat at least 8 times a day to keep my energy up.  Might of been because of the lack of acid to break down the food.

Dont feel bad griff, I feel crappy today too so that makes 2 of us tongue . Enjoy your disability by doing nothing but resting. i'm getting spoinled by being at home since my wife works from here amd I getto spend as much time as I can during the day with my 11 month old. Yes it will also take a while to get back together after wards. I met a lady at CVS that had ot have the emergency surgery because her stomach was strangulating its self in her eso[hogus. She said it took her 8 weeks but she had tarditional surgery, not laproscopic. My brother also had the traditional dome twice now but he drinks too much so I cant take his word for how well he has healed nono .

Marie, I know how inpatient we can be after the surgery. We all think that this surgery will magically make us better and then feel let down when in some cases we feel worse. I have come to terms with that and even though I get frustrated to the pint to where I curse the surgery, I know that this cant last for ever. I can feel my body healing its self, slowly. Its days like yesterday and the day before that make me feel like I made the rite choice. I FELT SOOO GOOD!! I just wish it wasnt so back and forth.

Marie, I have also read that because of the swelling the wrap doesnt seal rite because the swelling causes creases where the acid sneeks up through. A doctor told me this and then I read it on this forum. I think Bill might of mentioned it. So give it some time. Take the prilosec twice a day if need be. Taht is what the surgeon told me to do if needed. I have the caplets so I pour the contents out in to a glass of clear juice and sip it through a straw. Its grainy but works well. Just dont chew the contents. Also remember that acid wears down the esophogus so the pain you might be feeling is just irritation from eating and drinking as your body heals.

Sounds like your are very tech savvy. I'm all mechanical and lack the technical side of it. I can set up any electrical/electronic system up as long as it has a diagram or instructions. But if I had your technical ability with my mechanical know how I would be a millionare yeah ...LOL!!

Try to relax and take it easy. The nedication never helped me before surgery. The only thing that hepled a little was gaviscon but then that stopped helpiong.
Marie I was lucky the reflux was gone when I woke op from the surgery. I had little bouts with it after the surgery.
Sorry about the scare you had Rafael. It looks like you have good neighbors. That always helps when neighbors help to look after each other

Hello, Rafael! Thankyou so much for the message, for taking time writing it, I appreciate it alot...
There are  good people on this forum, who have valuable information. I feel really lucky to have found it....

I did the manometry test, only once. The only thing I did not like was the doctor rushed through it, and he just "said ah you're ok, your pressure seems normal , not that bad or something...He said you do not have swallowing problems, I think it's a problem with your sphincter/valve...I also got tested for H-pylori through endoscopy (+ excess stomach acidity tests) to rule out that i have stomach acidity instead of a defective sphincter, it was ruled out...So, that leaves me with a defective sphincter/or maybe loose valve (not yet sure, BUT I think it is really the same thing after I saw the esophagus diagram many times)...

I don't know how the pressure was normal when the barium test showed so much barium come back up my esophagus on the ct scan..and also when I bend down, i feel acids going up...weird...


On the other forum message, Shooz did a Magnetic Surgery for the Reflux...I am alsoo looking forwards for that one, i hope it gets FDA approval as soon as possible

Rafael, it's good your spending time with your wife and 11- month son, i think all this pain sometimes has some good side of it..the appreciation of life more...perhaps....I hope that everyone with reflux or other health-struggles will have people to stand by them too; it is very tough!

And thinking of it, yes, this reflux has got me to the point I was suicidal few times...I am currently working on being more positive about the future, as I will probably undergo a successful type of surgery...Also, I've started to program my mind that we have to be strong in life and go thru these tough struggles....ah , one doctor would not believe i had reflux at first, and thought i am just someone with a serious anxiety-illness...

Hope all thing going well.

I am feeling less a degree of pain with the incision today - and less of fever symptom compare to the last 4 days.

My stomach making noise like some type of water in the water pipe or something.

Wow - those earlier 4th days was little uncomfortable - manageable -but uncomfortable and it make me feel so weak.

Today is my 5th day and haven't taken any pain med yet. I feel my body is less of pain with the incision cut and I am able to walk a little faster, but I am still getting some burn in my throat.

I guess I was kinda of naive - expect the doctor fix it right away -

I went to USC while back earlier this year 2009 - for Linx Trial out.

Jules, do you live in US or other country. Linx procedure trial out is also appear in other europe country too.

But if you live in US, there are several place that have the trial procdure.

but I didn't qualify for the Linx procedure because I had barrent. I also had hernia too.

I signed up for the Linx procedure trial out, they put me on all the tests - 24HR PH, Manometry, endoscopy, and

the white chalk -milk like swallow test - I don't recall - total of 4 or 5 test I think. Endocscopy test showed that I have barrent so the dr say I didn't qualify because of the Linx's procedure they have to follow.

From my USC dr -he mention that Linx is also pretty affective controlling reflux - it is an outpatient thing.

The linx procedure is much easier. - It took like 20minute for them to implement the device  compare to nissen - anywhere from 1 hr to 3 hr or more.  Also, if for any reason - if something goes wrong, it can be undone. I think the Linx is a very smart idea. Also, the Linx is on its phase II -

As my dr at USC told me during Phase I - if I recall correctly there were like 70 Patient or so doing phase I and only 2 patient didn't work for them because they had super reflux. So they have to remove those 2 and put them on Nissen.

Since Shooz is the latest patient with the Linx device, did you able to find out more info from him?

im ok one of my worst nites last nite.. so much so i thought i was a goner.. so i slept in my car in the Er parking lot witht hope everything especially the shooting chestpain would go away... sigh.. i basically exhausted myself.. how sad is that lol
mine's done at zion in san diego, ca. my doc's been doing it for 20 plus years, and has been teaching others how to do it for a long time.. so he sounds amaazing in my mind!
gosh i hope its quick like that!! i can always hold out on number 2 lol
my buddy said it takes a lot fo time, but its gradual! glad to hear ur doing great!!

i tried 8 times a day adn ended up in the er cause my body produced WAY TOO MUCH ACID...
hahah the local crappy bunch! yeah i plan on 8 weeks and maybe longer.. it all depends how im feeling.. infact i called in sick today ebcause last nite was a disaster... sigh its okay we take it ONE DAY AT A TIME! im waiting for my schooling refund, and my last work pay check will be decent so i bought a bunch of books online and movies to keep me busy!!:D
how long between your brothers did he have his done??

i looked into it but i severe reflux and a damaged les (mamotry test made the dcotor who did it nearly die lol)

Jules I'm so glad you are feeling better about your situation! If your doctor rushed through your manometry test I would get the results from him in paper. Who cares what he thinks. hes suposed to follow facts not guesses. Make sure the pressure readings are on it. He may not think its big deal that your LES is slightly leaking but another doctor might. Keep pushing them to do their job. Some one will eventually hear you scream loud enough to get you the help you need.

Mariex, I'ts great to hear you are feeling better on your 5th day. You will progressively start to feel beter from hear on out. I tried to take some milanta today. just enough to coat my esophogus to see if the burning I feel might be acid and nothing happend. i keep my milanta in the fridge so it felt really good going down cold. So i'm getting to the comclusion that my burning isnt acid related. try taking a bit of milanta and see is that helps a bit. Mi lanta will work on minor acid reflix. It allways did for me.

griff, sorry to hear you are still hating life right now. But I see you getting closer to the end of the tunnel. I never slept in my car but remember passing out from fatigue after not being able to sleep from the pain. My brother had his first surgery all most 10 years ago. He had his second earlier this year and seems to be doing better now. He has barrets now too. I dont....I think?

griff, what part of SD are you in? My wife was born there and we lived there for 10 years. We were in Chula Vista 5 minutes from J Street Marina. We hope to retire down there onec our kids graduate school.

Today I pushed my self to do a bit more than usual trying to disregard the pain/discomfort. Laying down still makes me feel a lot better than sitting or standing.I just realized that it will be 8 weeks when I see the doctor. I really hope I can tell him everything is better by then.

Im having trouble finding stuff to eat. I'm really getting nausius when eating the same things I have been eating for the last 5 weeks! I really hope I can start eating more solid foods soon. Some days I dont even feel like eating untill the hunger pains get really bad. This worries me because i dont want to start over producing acid again.


I hope you all had a manageable weekend. Keep focused and pushing forward.

guess i made a new one for the books lol yeah i just dont know how im gonna make it 2 weeks.. its gonna be rough i know that...
i dont think i have barrets, had an endo 3 months ago and it showed none so yay.. thats not bad 10 years... glad to hear it! he did well after his? howd they find his barrets?

Im in poway in san diego. I used to be in chula vista, i know where that is! whyd u move:( very cool! how many kids u got?

im sure youll be feeling great if not maybe recovery will take a little bit longer.. yeah for me id be going nuts but tough it out.. it takes time and rest and spirit! My biggest issue rite now is my ears are really bothering me lately... like yawning hurts my ear drums and i dont know whether its the ppi or the acid.. sigh... 2 plus weeks of this crap.. plus my left arm muscle pain is bugging but im trying.. i just hope for an easy resting nite... plz:)

griff, Hopefully you had a restfull nite. Hang in there buddy.

I didnt ask him about his first one too much but he said that it came undone and thet the hernia came back. It was affecting his heart and pushung against his lungs as well as damageing his esophogus. He had his done in Mexico both times because he has busineses there though he lives here in the states and my niece, his doughter, and her husband are both doctors there. My niece assited with his last surgery...weird. He used to have a drinking problem so I'm sure years of drinking hard liquor didnt help the erosion. He used to sigh a lot, like he couldnt take a deep breath. I used to do that too. Funny that he is the oldest and has it and I'm the youngest and have it. We are 5 in total and no one else has it. I guess 2 out of 5 isnt bad..LOL! He had a scope done before his last surgery and they saw the damage to his esophogus.

We moved from C.V. in 04 when the housing market was crazy, at the peak of the housing bubble. We wanted a bigger house since the one we owned was on a 1/4 acre, but was only 1010 square feet. Our master bedroom was 10x11! Well we couldnt afford to take on a $700,000 loan to move to East C.V. so we sold and moved to Dallas Tx where we waited out the bubble to burst and thats why we came back to Cali. We miss S.D. but the economy was so bad when we came back last year that we had to move because I couldnt get work. Here I work for my brother in law. Nepatism is great..LOL. We miss living down there so bad. We lived right across from the Chula Vista High School performing arts center, on K St, between 4th and 5th. I love that older area though its not as pretty as the newer communities to the east. If we can move back sooner we will. But unfortunatly construction work is very slow rite now every where.

We have 2 boys. Julian is 8 and Jacob is 11 months. Julians was suposed to be an only child but he wanted a sibling and we couldnt tell him no. So god blessed us with Jacob, our miracle baby. He had a 2 vessle umbilicle cord, 3 vessels are how god designed it to be, and were told that he would probable have health issues of some kind ranging from organ malfunction to mental retardation. Today he is a 25 pound, strong, healthy, intelligent little guy who is very indipendent and determined to take hie first step any day now.

Do you have a hobby griff or something that you can get lost in while you waite for your surgery date since you are now disabled? I took up hobby grade remote control cars, mostly off road trucks and buggies, when I was diagnosed with depression 2 years ago and found that, to this day, it helps me forget the current status of my helath. I used to have a lot of time to tinker and build before the surgery because when I couldnt sleep because of the pain and I would spend hours in the garage modyfing and building. Most times I would be out there untill I gave in to fatigue at 3-4 in the morning. Its expensive and I have sold off most of them since being on disability but hope to get back to tinkering on my free time when I get better. I hope to start racing again soon too.

Take it very slow now that you are off work. rest up and try and sleep when you can. You will need the rest for the days to come after the surgery. Take care, friend.

Howdy Rafael.Just a question for you can you lift heavy objects when you are healed up in your line of work.Im sort of in the same boat and you get people saying after the surgery you cant lift anything heavy anymore.Have a good day.......

yeah im trying went to doctor's today and he's putting me out starting now all the way til november 23rd. He says i need the recovery and he honestly sees me too much lol. Thanks doc! wow yeah i heard that come happen, how r u feeling btw? better i hope!
yeah work is horrible down here (thank god i got a job!:) )... and cali's at 12% unemployment too so ergh... its beautiful down here, minus the occasional fire and craze.. oh and our city is flat broke but thats cool lol. Well if you ever move down here, stop by! your always welcome!:)

wow congrads! aw how cute my niece just turned a year and a half, and my older sister is pregers again, so the next one should be here by start of next year yay!:D
yeah actually i luv perry mason books and i finished searching and buying them all for way cheap (bout a penny to a buck each), so im going to read thema ll, watch tons of movies, and tv programs i have always had and never watched... i want to write a lot too! plus my friends said they would visit me.. hopefully lol

naw every once in a blue moon i get depressed from the pain but besides all that im good, the pain's a butt though lol

thanks to my gerd and the prilosec, i sleep about 13 hours a day lol it sucks... but im well rested... til i get tired by the end of the day. Your recovery going good? What do you do for your bro in law?

Pluss does anyone know how long the weight restriction is on? he put me out for 8 weeks after the surgery ATLEAST, and i dont wanna push it AT ALL...

Cowboy, my doctor said that after a lengthy recovery I can bo back to work like I allways have. No ristrictions. hes keeping me off of work bit more than some one who works a less strenuous job because I was really inflamed. I hope to get back to work because disability is only 60% of my pay and things are tight.

Yeah well have to get together and share a slice of bread...LOL!!!

Griff, I never got that much sleep before my surgery.

Being an uncle is really cool. I'm an uncle 16 times!!

By tinker I mean mess around with my toys in the garage.

Today I was able to sit in the garage and build one of my Remote Control buggies that I hope to race in the near future. I still feel inflamed and the palps still persist. But I try to ignore it all as much as possible, though its hard. I didnt get much rest today but I didnt strain my self eather since I have a very comfortable work stool, so i should get a good nites rest today. The burning and the palps only come on when I get out of bed in the morning, then last all day untill I retire for the night. Still hard to take a deep breath too. I can feel where the Nissen is because its still sore too. Its about 4 fingers below the center of my abdomen measuring from just below my rib cage. I'm taking the advice given to me here and just letting the recovery lead the way. i'm back on mostly a liquid diet so i'm allwasy hungry all teh time again.

But all in all, I still feel way better than before the surgery.
