I've tried all the meds there are for GERD and they either didn't work or I got weird side effects. The one I'm on now, Kapidex, is fairly new and it's supposed to be top of the line. Well it's not working! I have the worst nausea ever, makes me run to the bathroom it's so bad. I can feel the acid puddling in the back of my throat. I went to the dr Wed and she is going to up the mgs from 30 to 60. She said if this doesn't work we can talk about surgery. I'm at wits end with all of this. I'm sick of taking pills only to have them not work or to make symptoms worse or add new symptoms! She said she's getting frustrated with this too. Well so am I! But right now I feel like I'm back at square one again. I recall the nausea being this bad before I went back to work, was on maternity leave. All I did was lay on the couch. None of the antinausea meds helped either. I ended up calling in to work today cause it's so bad. I bought some ginger so I'm going to try that, heard good things about it. I know there are a few different types of surgery for this so I'm wondering which one has the highest success rate.

You will get many an wide variables as to which surgery is the lastest and greatest and bestest. What we really need to know is what tests if any have you had done? For sure you should have an EGD just to see what it looks like in there. A ph study to determine what is refluxing. A manometry to see how the esophagus is working. I also believe a barium swallow would be in order to see if anything gets stuck and if the can see any refluxing going on. All of this should be done BEFORE any surgery is thought up. If the surgeons say they don't need any of these numbers RUN! Run FAR AWAY. Everyone has to meet certain criteria to be considered a good candidate for these surgeries. If they don't do the tests there is no way to know if the is any chance of success. I understand it takes a while to get these all finisdhed and then read, but it is neccessary for a good outcome.Even my surgeon who didn't do my first one correct was on track with having all the data he needed and said I was a good candidate, he just lacked to skills then to get it done right. Who knows, maybe he has gotten a few 100 under his belt now and his patients do wonderful. I will never know. I do know my second surgeon has done several hundreds of these as the head surgeon and this time around all is great. Well, except for that little bout of leaking holes in the stomach and now the unrelated kidney stones. That's another story for another rainny day read. Anyhow, Please take the advice we give to heart and make an informed decision.

The only test I've had is the EGD. I'm sure they would have me do the rest of the testing. She just said we will talk about surgery. I didn't have any problems before I got pregnant with my daughter. Love her to death but hate the other problems I've had.

Hang in there. When I get nauseous with reflux I chew a few tums. Sometimes it helps.

Hey there,

Have you ever been on Zofran for nausea.  My sister used that when she had chemo and it worked for her. 

I think Bill gave you great advice on how to move forward when your talking surgery.

So sorry you're having so many problems and not getting results or improvement. I know what you mean with the meds not working. I took Protonix 40mg twice a day, and still had reflux. My reflux caused severe asthma symptoms, so that's why I finally opted for the Nissen Fundoplication surgery, and I'm really glad I did. I'm so much better now! (I also began with reflux during my pregnancy.)

I totally agree with Bill that you need to pursue the basic testing that he listed. That testing can determine your suitability for surgery--although like me, some people don't fit the mold. My reflux wasn't as severe as many people here, but it was enough to set my lungs off and keep them in a constant state of inflammation. Your symptoms are the most telling aspect of your reflux problems. Of course, if you had absolutely no reflux with the PH monitor, they'd probably start looking elsewhere for the solution to your problem. I highly doubt that, though.

Hang in there, girl. You will get help for your problems. You've just got to get through the testing and searches for answers.

Thanks guys! Kitt, I've had zofran, reglan, and phenergan for nausea and none helped. It went away for a while but I've been on so many meds the last 2 months I can't remember which one helped it!

I'll see what my dr wants to do. I don't go back to him for another month!
