45 year old male in Washington, DC that was diagnosed with GERD in May 2008. I have radically changed the way I live regarding food & beverage intake and once I was diagnosed I soon found out that all of my family (mother, sister, 2 brothers) have been living with this for years.

My main symptoms are chest pains (radiating to back & arms) & palpitations that will ruin my day or week. There is a definite level of anxiety associated with episodes but I am definitely fed up with doctors telling me to live with it & take your PPI. Also, added to the mix is that I just lost my job and cannot afford insurance so will have to live with Prilosec OTC vs. Aciphex.

There has to be a better way so looking @ starting an alkaline diet (fruits, vegetables, etc.) with DGL Licorice (saw on a post - will try) so I can start dropping some lbs. (approximately 20 lbs overweight).

BTW - have gone through the EKG, Stress Test, Blood work & all is fine (with cardiologist) then moved to Gastroenterologist with ultrasound (spleen a tad enlarged) & endoscopy (esophagitis, scarring in esophagus, pre-Barret's Syndrome if not controlled).

Frustrated but I know dietary changes will help & I hope all on here get the relief they seek & need

I am glad you are actively working on maintaining an  alkaline diet.  You have a wonderful, positive attitude.

I know you will learn much in the forums and it looks like your found the info on DGL Licorice already.

I am sorry to hear you have lost your job and with it your insurance.  That was a tough loss for you.  You will find the members here very supportive so stick with us.

I am sorry you are going through the problems you have. Hope things get better for you. Keep working on the diet loss that was a prerequisite for me even having the surgery I now have to work on keeping it off.Keep us posted

Welcome!! I know how you must feel as most of us that belong to this forum feel the same way! I hope that you stick with the forum as their stories sure have helped me be alittle more at ease! I too suffer with anxiety just finally bit the bullet and got put on Xanax..... I sure hope this forum helps you like it has helped me and others!!
