Ok, I have been fighting this "sleepless in Kingman" thing now for 2 months...2 visits to the ER that resulted in 2 stays in the hospital. One of the many test that I had done was a HIDA scan, the report reads, The liver shows prompt radiotracer uptake and excretion. The gallblader fills. There is no cystic duct obstruction. Examination was carried out for 120 minutes. The gallblader did not empty. There is no radiotracer activity seen within the samll bowel at 120 minutes post injection." 1. The gallblader fills. There is no cystic duct obstruction. 2. The gallblader did not contract. No radiotracer activity seen in the small bowel at 120 minutes post injection.

While at the hospital, I had one doctor tell me my gallblader was not working, then a surgeon jumps in and says, there is nothing wrong with the gallblader.....

Just got back from post hospital visit with my doctor, she says, looks like your gallblader does not empty....get a second opion, which I am.

My question to the forum is; has anyone else had this happen? and what was the end results?

Hello, this is Kitt.

You may have gallstones preventing the flow of bile.

Gallstones can block the normal flow of bile if they move from the gallbladder and lodge in any of the ducts that carry bile from the liver to the small intestine. The ducts include the

  • hepatic ducts, which carry bile out of the liver
  • cystic duct, which takes bile to and from the gallbladder
  • common bile duct, which takes bile from the cystic and hepatic ducts to the small intestine

Your test referred only to the cystic duct. Please do get another opinion.

Geesh, I sure hope that doesn't happen when I have my HIDA Scan on this Friday, sure hope I get answers!! I agree you need a second opinion that is just crazy for that doctor to make that comment!! Darn them!! I hope that you find a doctor soon, not sure the pain you are in but my gallbladder is giving me a hoot of a time, and with us being military I have to go through all these test even though the surgeon is almost certain it is my gallbladder! ((hugs))

Got a second opinion today, this surgeon is willing to remove my gallbladder, but he kinda creeped me out.....so, I am going back to the first surgeon and grill him about why he thinks doesnt need to be removed

Good idea to go back to your first surgeon and ask more questions.  You ca always get a third opinion :-)

If it won;t empty it isn't working correctly. They give you a drug that is supposed to make it contract during the Hida scan and mine was only working 24% at the time and 2 weeks later stopped all together when the surgeon tested it right before he removed it. Do you have any pains or symptoms? I saw you had been in the hospital a couple times, so I am assuming you are having the dreaded gallbladder attacks. My last one was for 36 or 37 hours. I went to the ER and the doctor told me it couldn't be my gallbladder because I wasn't female and over forty....Sometimes these doctors are such a pain in my .......Well anyway, What was the horror stories the second surgeon gave you? My only issue has been bile induced diarrhea that can be managed with meds if you ask for them. I was prescribed them by my GI doctor. They work very well. Other than that I no longer have any pain when I eat something greasy and nobody in stabbing me with a #2 phillips screw driver ion my shoulder blade. All in all I am very happy to be rid of my gallbladder. After the things I have been through the last year or so I would do the gallbladder surgery 3 or 4 times.

Thanks Bill, the second surgeon I saw, he didn't take very much time, I felt like he was just willing to do the job, because the money he would make, may improve his vacation....or something (I don't know if he going on vacation or not, he just didn't seem very....ya know)

I am going to see the first surgeon again on Tuesday and grill him why he does not think the HIDA scan report is accurate. But here I am at 1:30 in the morning wide awake with pain in my stomach.

One thing I don't understand, is and I think the surgeon may be thinking along the same line, is how can I have gasterintitis (spl) if my gallbladder isn't flowing?

The first surgeon conducted a endoscopy and told me I had a very red area in my stomach around the outlet of the stomach, which explains the pain I feel there....is it possible that the gallbladder does not empty and the liver just keeps pumping bile until it just gushes out of my old stiff gallbladder? and then I feel a lot of pain through my belly?

That is very possible. If it won't discharge when it is signaled to it could just basically overflow. You said your stomach is hurting, where exactly is the pain? Is in the right upper quadrant? Or does it ever go to your right shoulder blade area or by your spine? My hurt up under the edge of my right ribs and also in my right shoulder blade. Felt like a screw driver stuck in my back. My ribs area hurt so much I wanted to reach in there and pull whatever was causing it out. I actually had tried to shove my fingers under my ribs a couple times to see if I could get it to stop.
Since you mentioned the red area in your stomach, it seems there is a very close relationship between gallbladder disease and GERD disease. I have no clue what the connection is, but there are a lot of people who have issues with both at the same time. Me included.
I hope you get some answers. Remember if tou don't get a satisfactory answer you have the right to a third, fourth, firth, etc. opinion.

I have been fighting this hernia for a long time.. but they can't do the gerd test to make sure I am a candidate.. the stomach comes up and pushes the probe out into my mouth.. nasty nasty. couldn't find a doctor that could do them either.

Well last friday I wasn't drinking enough water and it came up and twisted. they had to go in and push the stomach back into place.. it had a bolis in it..  would love to find a good doctor that does the nissan wrap

Back in 1978 I had a stone rip the bile duct.. got peritinitis and was hospitalized for a few months.. got to say that isn't afun thing.. hope all goes well..
