Going to see the surgeon

I have an appt with the surgeon on the 16th. After everything I read, I don't think I want the nissen. I'm really hoping the Linx can get approved. My dr said the surgeon usually just does the nissen but I'm going to ask about the other less invasive procedures first.

My doctor takes out of town/ out of state patients. If you want I can send you a link to his site.
He does the EsopheX and I believe he's also doing the linx study.

I'm not sure what your situation is, and why you're not considering the lap Nissen procedure, but I would say that I'm thrilled with the results of the Nissen I had in February. I was very worried as I was considering what to do about my uncontrollable GERD-induced asthma. I certainly understand why you'd be hesitant. There are a lot of very negative posts around the internet.

It's a decision only you can make, but I'd encourage you to at least consider the Nissen as one of your choices. While it's not perfect, it's been around for 50 years, (only 10 or so as a laproscopic procedure) and it has helped many people. The horror stories you read about are generally the result of an incompetent surgeon. If you're very careful who you select to do the surgery, your odds are greatly improved.

I did NOT want to have the Nissen. I avoided it for four years, and during that time I was on so many steroids for my asthma that I have developed irreversible skin problems (thin skin that tears and bruises very easily). If I'd been smart, I'd have had the surgery years ago, and could have avoided that side effect.

I'm not saying that you won't do great with the other procedure routes. I'm just saying that the Nissen is an excellent option for the right patient, in the hands of the right surgeon. The recovery isn't all that bad. I was on liquids in the hospital, then five days on soft foods. After that I was able to eat whatever I wanted, as long as I was able to chew it to a liquid. That is pretty much anything.

I was back to eating normally after a couple months or so. My only limitations now are taking those giant calcium-type supplements. Other than that I'm back to normal, and unfortunately have gained most of the weight I lost back. (We're moving, and have been eating out a lot--not a great thing for weight control! It does show, though, that post surgery you do get back to normal pretty quickly.)
