Endoscopy results and a question

Hiatal hernias are diagnosed incidentally when an upper gastrointestinal x-ray or endoscopy for abdominal pain. On both the x-ray and endoscopy, the hiatal hernia appears as a separate "sac" lying between what is clearly the esophagus and what is clearly the stomach. This sac is delineated by the lower esophageal sphincter above and the diaphragm below. The hernia may only be visible during swallows, however.


Since sliding hiatal hernias rarely cause problems themselves but rather contribute to acid reflux, the treatment for patients with hiatal hernias is usually the same as for the associated GERD.

When i had mine done i was diagnosed with a HIATAL AND GASTRitus this was in july and lets just say im not doing much better.

Turns out there was some miscommunication between my doctor, my mom, and my drugged-up post-EGD self and I do have a small HH. Still no visible esophagul damage. Biopsies showed "irritation" and a thinning in the mucus lining of the stomach, near the top of the stomach, but no growths or infections. The doctor doesn't know what's causing the irritation though, so he wants me to get another EGD in 2-3 mos to see if it's changed. The doctor said it looked like kinda like bleeding capillaries and mentioned something about finding "old blood," but specifically said it's not an ulcer and a month ago we found no signs of internal bleeding in my stool samples (ewwww...) Has anyone else had something similar?

I also have an esophagul manometry scheduled in about 2 weeks. The doctor explained what the test was and yuck, that does not sound fun at all! But I bet a lot of you have had it...

So for now I'm just sticking with the diet and Nexium and we'll see what the next tests show...

Okay, here's the details:
1. no sedation allowed
2. empty stomach
3. They squirt lidocaine up both nostrils... nasty.
4. They give you a cup of water with a straw and tell you to drink. As you drink they insert a small tube with sensors on it into your nose. If you have a deviated septum like me, it will be slightly painful. :(
5. They slowly feed it down to your stomach. Be prepared to gag alot and feel like your going to throw up. You don't, but you feel like it.
6. They lay you back slightly and adjust the tube to the proper place. The gagging will lessen at this point.
7. They tape the tube down to your nose.
8. Then you have to do 10 perfect swallows of water the way the doctor wants you to do.

Warning: The more you fight the tube the longer the test takes. You have to go to your "happy place " during the test. After the test is done, they quickly pull out the tube and let you rest for a few minutes. My face was blood red when I was done and I was exhausted from the strain. But I was so relieved that it was over and done with.

Did he take pictures of the irritation? My surgeon found polyps due to long term usage of PPIs.
