Stomach Polyps and Hiatal Hernia

Haven't been here in a while.  I had my endoscope yesterday and the doctor found erosive gastritis (longstanding and did biposy), numerous polyps (biposied 2 at random), and a small hiatal hernia.

In my previous endos they found non-erosive gastritis, 2 polyps were removed (no mention of there being more but there could have bee), and a medium hiatal hernia.  I guess the gastritis can go back and forth from non-erosive to erosive depending on inflammation?  But how does a medium sized hiatal hernia get smaller?

The doctor didn't seem all that concerned about the polyps.  I am a long term user of PPI's (at least 9 years) and have been on Kapidex for 1 year.  The polyps first appeared last year after I had been on protonix for 2-3 years.  Does anyone know if Kapidex also causes polyps?

To the best of my knowledge, Kapidex side effects have included gastric polyps and gastritis in < 2% of people on this medication. Do talk to your GI Physician if you feel this medication is the culprit.

I got polyps from long term use of Nexium and zantac. I decided to get the surgery instead of running the risk of cancer.

Thanks for answering. I had polyps once before when I was on Protonix. I never had it on Prevacid (which had quit working). My next appointment with the gastro doc isn't until Feb 4th. I'm praying the biposies come back negative.

Got the results. The news was good. The polyps are the gastric kind that never grow or develop into anything. The doctor said the medical community is arguing over whether it is the chronic gastritis or the GERD meds that cause them. He is recommending that I lower my dosage from 120 mg a day to 60mg. I have done so and haven't really had any negative effects. The biposies all came back good-no sign of H Pylori infection (had infection in Nov), and the ucler is gone.

Hi sorry to butt in! My 81 yr old aunt who lives with us has just been diagnosed with hiatus hernia and polyps on the hernia. Can anyone give us a bit of info on this? as can't find much on google! Causes, treatments or problems??? Any help would be appreciated, nurse didn,t really explain much!! smurf   Thankyou

A hiatal hernia occurs when part of your stomach pushes upward through your diaphragm. Your diaphragm normally has a small opening (hiatus) that allows your food tube (esophagus) to pass through on its way to connect to your stomach. The stomach can push up through this opening and cause a hiatal hernia. In most cases, a small hiatal hernia doesn't cause problems, and you may never know you have a hiatal hernia unless your doctor discovers it when checking for another condition. But a large hiatal hernia can allow food and acid to back up into your esophagus, leading to heartburn and chest pain.

Stomach polyps are small growths that stick out of the lining in your stomach. Most of them are benign and usually won't cause any symptoms besides stomach inflammation.  I suspect the Doctor was referring to stomach polyps.  Please do talk with your aunt's Doctor and ask for a written report of what was found on her tests.

Thanks for your reply! Would have started my own thread but have no idea how to and only had a quick ten mins trying to find out, lol! much appreciated for the reply though.

I have just reread the diagnosis though and it reads, "5cm hiatus hernia with a large polypoid lesion in the hernia. Smaller polyp in the lower body. Biopsy results and further FU results to follow. CT scan of chest and abdomen has been arranged." Does this change any info that you gave me or is it just a case of something that was found looking for other things? The reason Aunt was having the test was because she is aneamic and despite being given iron tabs for quite some time is still so! She is also a diabetic. She also had a colonoscopy 4 weeks ago which showed slight diaverticular disease which apparently is also something due to age and may never be uncovered unless looking for other things, so basically nothing to worry about! We just need to know if we should be worried or changing her diet, or even pushing the doctors to do more or move quicker! Its just not knowing seems unresponsible seen as we are Her Carers if you know what I mean!

Very much appreciate your help, I never knew sites like this existed. Sorry for jumping on someone elses thread its just I tried to find where to post a new message and it seemed easier to go back to google once I registered and reply to the one I found! Lol! But not very computer illiterate so I'm sure it would have been easier for someone else!

My mother is anemic, has diaverticular disease, and diabetic. Have your doctor check her for lukocytopenia with her anemia. Her anemia might be MDS.
