newbie here and worried about my husband and his GERD

I am new to this forum, have bee reading some of your posts.

My question is my husband has had GERD for about 10years.  He is on Nexium 40mg daily.  He had a bad GERD attack in Dec in the middle of the nightand since them he coughs for about 1 hour after he eats.  I am worried becuase he tells me right after it happened that he felt like he had a little ball in the neck, but now that has gone away and he just has a chronic cough and its worse right after he eats.

I am very scared as he gets  a scope tuesday.  Are these common side effects of GERD?  What about the "C" word?  I am very scared, and worried about what the doctor will find on tuesday, he is 53.  I kindly ask if these symptoms are felt by others with GERD.

thanks, just scared becuase I never heard him cough for an hour after he ate, and now has a chronic cough since he had a bad GERD episode in the middle of Dec. Not sure what can be causing the cough.

Rose, Sorry to hear about your husband, but I can really relate. Coughing was my only symptom (never had to take any OTC GERD meds) and was only recently diagnosed with GERD last summer, but had had the cough for years.. I just had the Lap Nissen a little over 2 weeks ago and so far so good, but that was only after a lot of necessary procedures in order to determine if this was even a possibility. Have him see a specialist to see where he may need to go next... Let us know..

Rose, it sounds like your husband has what's called silent Gerd. I suffered from it. What's happening is acid is flowing into his lungs causing the cough. He is catching colds from his lungs being irritated. I had the surgery back in December. It has stopped my coughing. The doctor did a 270° wrap of my stomach around my esophagus. They call it the Hill procedure. It is not a severe wrap that is normal for the traditional Nissen fundoplication. My recovery has been very good. As long as I do not over eat I have no trouble.

hi, im due to go for the ph studies very soon then if my results come bk that i need to have the nissan fundoplication, they will see about opperateing on me, as for when will ya doctor know when you are needing this opp it all depends on the indervidule, i have had gerd for 5 years along with ibs , and have only just got this far, and was admitted with my gerd into hospital 3 times last november, 3 times last december, and touch wood only once so far in january, i do have a sliding hiatus hernia , but am told that is because of me gerd , hope all goes well for your husband x tina

I hope everything goes well with your husband's exam tomorrow. The actual procedure is not that bad if he has sedation. I hardly remember anything from that day. LOL!
