I met with my endocrinologist yesterday. I have suffered for a year from burping and feeling like I need to vomit which causes me to stop multiple times during vigorous exercise or when bending over lifting weights, or inclined pushups, etc. He recommends that I meet with the surgeon to discuss fundoplication. He had proposed this many years earlier, but said I was too young and would have to have the procedure done again. I forget to ask if it would be laproscopic or open. Here are my questions for those who have been through it:
1. As an avid exerciser, how long before I may return to vigorous exercise (kickboxing, spinning, calisthencis & plyometrics) and weight lifting? Are there any intense exercisers out there who have had this?? I would love to hear from you!
2. Under what circumstances does the surgeon opt to do open surgery instead of laproscopic?
3. Is it ok to take a plane trip during the end of the recovery period?
OLD POST:
I too started with difficulty breathing and an occasional burning sensation in my throat back in my early 20's (now 42). I have GERD, exercise-induced asthma, allergies (mold, pollen, dust), hiatal hernia. A couple doctors have told me that they are all linked together. Once you start with one, one generally develops the rest over time.
I took Advair for several years and didn't have any difficulty with side effects, but it didn't help my EIA. I recently took Singulair but that gives me swollen glands and an upper respiratory illness, so I had to stop that. Currently, there is nothing else for me to try for exercise induced asthma. I have pretty much taken everything over the years. I just carry my albuterol and do the best I can when spinning, kickboxing, etc.
