Nissen scheduled after TIF failure

Hi   I had the TIF surgery April 9th of this year.   After 5 days I had the returning feeling of sinus drip.    Then burning tongue, nose, throat.

I had an appt in pittsburgh for scope, manometry and ph wire.   7/22/2010

Tues I went to see the Dr at Shady Side Medical.    What was really strange was I still have reflex but no acid with the ph wire tests.    I did stop taking my Protonix 10 days before the test as they requested but I took Zantac which the nurse told me I could still take up to 3 days before the test.   I am wondering if the Zantac kept the acid down.

The Dr would like me to go to a ears, nose throat Dr to rule out that my sinuses could be causing the burning.   That appt is Monday.

He did schedule my surgery for October 20.    Saying he would fix the valve.

I am getting kind of scared about this, but dont really like this burning that doesnt seem to go away.

Any thoughts on the no acid registering?

Sorry about your continuing problems. Did your doctor speak to you about the possibility of bile reflux? It's not acidic, but would taste sour, and can be very irritating. Bile would cause the problems, but not register on the PH monitor.
Here's a quote from a scientific abstract on the subject:

"pH monitoring, although the only subjective test available to identify acid refluxers, is not a sufficiently sensitive test with which to define alkaline [bile] reflux."

Would the dr see bile when doing a scope?

This isnt a sour taste it is burning like maybe having a peppermint in my nose, or menthol taste.  definitely not sour.

You've got a top MD at Shadyside who trained under one of the very best in the world. I would trust him. I had some testing there, but never got to meet him in person, although I've read some of his papers.

Alcie .......yes you are right.  I do have one of the top Md's.

I dont have any symptoms of bile reflux.    No nausia, no vomiting, no gastritus. 

Thats why I know there are people out there more miserable than I am, but I think the longer I wait this could be my future.    I want to be off these meds.

The problem with the test part is Dr has nothing to compare it to as I didnt have any of those tests done before the TIF surgery.    Just my Barium swallow that shows acid reflux.

Just no acid very strange the only thing I can think of the zantac I took.    It does say it reduces acid.

I am excited about having the surgery but scared too.

Monday I have an appt. at the eye and ear institute to rule out the burning is caused by my sinuses.     Then I have an appt. with my cardiac dr for cardiac clearance for surgery.

The next thing will be appt. with my PCP to schedule blood work and exam for clearance .

My surgery is scheduled for Oct 20 hope there is nothing to block having my surgery.

You can't get much better care than where you are. Your doc knows all about TIF because he did research on it. I'm sure he knows just what to do to fix it and give you a wrap that will be suitable for you individually.

Before my op I spend way too much time on the internet viewing operations and finding out if there was anything more simple that would work. I also had long talks with my gastroenterologist who encouraged me. I ws scared to death!

I'm glad you are with a very experienced surgeon who is trained and experienced in doing what he needs to when he gets in there. He'll dissect down enough esophagus from the mediastinum, which a lot of them don't. That makes a lot of difference in success.

There are no guarantees of getting off the meds permanently or at all, but at least you've got a place with a success record in the hi 90%s.

my husband thinks I have these symptoms because I read about them on the internet LOL.   I too have searched the internet.

I think I am driving him crazy.

Doc says he isnt doing the TIF surgery anymore.   He didnt go into detail but kind of indicated because of things that happened like my TIf surgery.

I would love to be off the meds but even if the meds worked would help.

I have found lots of helpful info for my conditions on the internet. Of course I always consider the source! Reading and watching videos about things like Nissen help me understand what to expect and are calming for me.

It seems friends and relatives mostly don't want to be plagued with our concerns. They want to be informed, but only to a point, and for some that point is pretty low. You should have been here when I showed my sister the pictures of my colon polyps. Ha-ha! I won't do that again! Fortunately we have forums!

I understand your nerves are probably as tight as violin strings at the prospect of doing it all again, and even more invasively. Just keep on posting your concerns. We care and won't get bored!
