I have just started doing the specific carbohydrate diet for GERD/LPR. After taking antibiotics and prednisone for a respiratory virus, my reflux was so bad that I thought I was having heart palpations but it was actually the acid splashing up in my chest. I didn't have a problem with heartburn previous to this but my reflux was so severe that my scope showed Barrett's esophagus. I am currently waiting for a second gastroscope (6 months later) to see if the thoracic surgeon fells that I will need a nelson fundolpication. I have been reading about
how low stomach acid causes a bacterial overgrowth and a malabsorption of carbohydrates which causes gas. The gas increases intra-abdominal pressure, which is the driving force behind acid reflux and GERD.
http://thehealthyskeptic.org/the-hidden-causes-of-heartburn-and-gerd . I noticed that grains increased my acid reflux and I always had more acid reflux after eating potatoes. Removing grains, starches, and complex carbohydrates from my diet (potatoes, corn, etc.) has really helped. I used apple cider vinegar to wean off nexium . I was taking nexium (80mg a day) but have weaned down to about
15mg a day. Although the apple cider vinegar helped, I still felt I was missing a piece of the puzzle. I think that following the SCD may be what I need to heal and get my life back. Is anyone else trying this diet? I have gone through hell for the past 8 months but I hope that I am on the path to healing now.
