Gastritis and Esophagitis in Misery for 7 months please help!

Hello,

     I am hoping that I am posting this in the right catagory,and I thank you for reading this,and any insight that you have. I am a 30 year old male,220 lbs...and prior to this i was healthy. I have had the following symptoms on a constant basis over the last 7 months. white coating on 3/4 of my tongue that never goes away and can't be wiped off(not thrush). Whenever I eat anything I feel horrible-my mouth goes crazy if I eat anything (esp but not limited to vinegar). While I'm eating the food will almost adhere to the coating(I know it's gross but thats how it is). I am at a point where I eat very little..no matter what I eat it doesn't matter. I haven't lost any weight,always feel full/bloated/horrible. I also started exercising on a daily basis. I had an endoscopy performed and it was determined that I have gastitis,as well as LA grade b esophogitis. They found a polyp,which came back negetive for bacteria/fungus. I have been on prilosec for almost a month,and it has done 0.0 to give me any relief. If I have any alcohol at all,I am hurting for days. I have been to 20 doctors and have gotten no resolve...I have hit a wall at this point and am so miserable that my entire existence revolves around how horrible I feel. I have been tested for the following all came back negetive-HIV(3 times),syphlis,herpes,chlamidia,gohnaria,hepatitis. All of my blood work comes back"fine"-their words not mine...including my CBC. my urine is acidic...I'm trying to give you as much info as possible. I need to identify whats causing the coating,and get treatment. I have had the worst year of my life and don't want to suffer in 2011...please help cry

I wonder if you have a yeast infection in your body?
Try this:
1. First thing in the morning when you wake up spit into a glass of water.
2. If your spit floats it could be candida infection.
If positive you need to go to the doctor and have them test for it and get some medicine.

Thank you for your quick response. I have also felt that this could be the case, I have suffered through several prostate infections(never got them before),as well as epididimitis(infection in the testicle) which by the way is a painfull as it sounds...could be caused by a yeast infection.I saw an ENT that freaked me the hell out. he told me that my autoimmune receptors in my mouth were damaged and that he felt that I had an autoimmune disease...hence the 3 aids tests. At one point I did the candida diet at the same time was taking diflucan(for a week)...this was pre-gastritis,at this point I am just constantly miserable. When I first noticed the coating on my toungue I went to my Dr.....he swabbed it and nothing came back. I honestly feel like I'm dying(no joke). I appreciate your help

See a GI for your gastritis. You might need something stronger for it.
Did you also get checked for H. Pyloria?

Joy,

The GI that did my endoscopy said that everything came back clear on the biopsy taken during the endoscopy(bacteria,fungus)...this being said,I did not do the blow test for H.Pyloria. I have an appointment next Friday,Im just hoping someone will a)know whats causing my issue,and b)know how to resolve it. Thanks again for your feedback.Honestly feels like I have been suffering more with gastritis symptoms since I started taking the Prilosec.

I wonder if you're a low acid person?????
Someone was posting about them being a low acid person.
Ask your doctor also for a ph test or BRAVO test. It will tell if you're a high acid person or low acid person. If your low acid PPIs hurt you more.

Good Morning and welcome to HealingWell.

A couple of things come to my mind,  have you been on any broad-spectrum antibiotics lately ?

Leukoplakia is something else you may want to discuss with your Doctor.  There is a form of leukoplakia caused by  Epstein-Barr virus.  Once you've been infected with EBV, the virus remains in your body for life. Normally, the virus is dormant, but if your immune system is weakened, either from disease or certain medications, the virus can become reactivated, leading to conditions such as hairy leukoplakia.

Just a few ideas -  I know how frustrating this is for you to have a problem  physicians are unable to dx. Take care and let us know how you are doing.

Thanks for your reply. I actually was tested for mono and that came back negetive as well,I'm not sure if there is a seperate test for EBV. I was on cipro for a long time due to reoccuring prostate infections. I don't think it's hairy leukoplakia based on the pictures i have seen on the web. the coating is on the top of my tongue in the same pattern everyday-it's not a thick coating. Joy had told me that if I did a "spit test" and the spit floated it could be a candida infection...I did it this morning and it didnt sink just stayed at the top around the perimeter of the glass.My Dr has told me that there is "nothing wrong with my tongue" for 7 months straight-it is unbelievably frustrating...Happy New Year

Just wanted to say...I understand your frustration, its hard not to get depressed and anxious... I am new to this GERD thing...I have been diagnosed with esophagitis and gastritis. I am miserable. I am in burning pain most of the day. They have me on Nexium and just switched me to Dexilant and Carafate...and man does the carafate burn. Just wanted to let you know you can buy ph testing kit on amazon. I may try them myself. I know other people who have had this and they said it took over a year to heal...no alcohol...saucy foods...they a blan diet. I bought some books on how to make my acidic system more alkaline. I know I cant take cipro without a script or two of diflucan. I have bought books...researched...etc. Try small meals 5 times a day. The antibiotics ( cipro,amoxicillin, and z pack) and stress actually caused my issuse. Just wanted to offer you support. The doctor told me what else do you want me to do for you...and is sending me for a second opinion. I feel your pain and do not wish it on anybody...not even you. I hope you heal soon and wish you a better new year...a healing new year.

I have also had severe gastritis and esophagitis (prior to my Nissen surgery), and have even been hospitalized in the middle of such a flare-up, due to the reflux affecting my asthma to the point of no return.

My experience is that each bout lasted probably 3-4 months, during which time I could eat almost nothing, and always lost at least 20 pounds. I survived on egg custard, as it was smooth and bland, and full of protein. Almost anything else caused me to have pain.

Be sure you don't eat anything rough, as your stomach mashes things, and you don't want to give it anything irritating to rub up against. That's also important for things as they travel down your irritated esophagus.

It takes a lot of patience, but with time things will heal. I know it seems like it will never happen, but it will.

schackd, I have had yeast infections due to antibiotics (actually the antibiotics were what generally put me into a gastritis-esophagitis tailspin in the first place--I'm very sensitive to them, and can only take a couple without problems.)
Your white coating sure sounds like yeast.

Good luck to both of you. Eat carefully, don't challenge your stomach at all. Take the time it takes to heal. A GI doc told me once that I should wait until my stomach feels perfect for about two weeks or so, before challenging it at all.

You're both definitely in the right place! I'm sure others will be by to weigh in on the subject, now that the holidays are over.

all I can say is hang in there. you know your body better than the docs and you know something is wrong (which does sound like a yeast thing).

I have had plenty of experience with docs not being very helpful, and then getting to hte right guy/girl who is. Be aggressive about getting the help you need. I sure had to be. I have been in a lot of misery with the GERD sx, then met with a doc who also dx'd me with gastroparesis and modifying my diet accordingly has really helped. I had that feeling full/bloated/awful feeling no matter what (but it turned out that it DID matter what, and I can tell now what foods so far will defintely make me feel that way; fats, fiber, all the GERD stuff, tomatoes, and so on, had lasagna for two nights and knew I would pay for it and I did!)

This is kind of off base but a friend of mine,not with your exact symptoms but several unpleasant ones, went to whole foods and talked to a guy who worked there. After going to a zillion docs who said he was fine (had dysentary-like stools for about two months, living on pedialyte) the whole foods guy told him to drop dairy and gluten and he'd feel better and he is totally cured. So....I'd think about nutritional counseling too (I did as well but not at whole foods).

Anyway, really, don't give up. As Denise said, I bet things will get better eventually

Are you feeling better? How long did it take to heal and what did you take (medicine) and eat?
