Appt with GI - anything I should know?

My ENT finally referred me to a GI dr and so I have an appt soon. Still having major problems with acid reflux (that was the ENT's best guess due to the red streaks on my vocal chords).

So I'm wondering if any of you have any tips or advice? What can I expect to happen at my first appt? Anything I should know?

My first visit was sitting there talking about my symptoms and habits.
The main excitement starts with the testings. :)

Ok exciting good or bad! I want to know, what kinds of tests do they do?

Most of them are not that bad.

1. Barium swallow- done on an empty stomach, drink barium in different positions as they xray you. Drink's a little chalky, but okay. Make sure to take a laxative afterwards to avoid blockages.

2. EGD- done on an empty stomach, usually done under partial sedated, you don't remember a thing about it

3. pH test or BRAVO- the pH test is usually involving a small wire ran down from your nose to your stomach. It stays for 24-48 hrs. :(
The BRAVO is a small capsule attached to your esophagus while under sedation. You wear a monitor for 48 hours and write in a journal feelings and reactions. It falls off after a few days. I had this one with no troubles.

4. Motility study- (not my favorite one). done on a empty stomach, Without sedation a small straw sized cathater is threaded down to your stomach via your numbed nose. You lay back and drink 10 perfect swallows of water while the computer reads the sensors. As they set everything up you feel gaggy, but it calms down after it is in position.

During your initial visit, the physician will discuss your medical history and give you a general examination. You should be aware of any past operations or major illnesses. Bring a list of current medications and drug allergies. Generally you will not receive any procedure during the first visit.

Even if you have a problem that requires continuing treatment by a gastroenterologist, your family doctor will still advise and/or treat you for all other non-related medical problems. Your family doctor will continue your treatment if and when your problem no longer requires the attention of a gastroenterologist. Your family doctor and gastroenterologist often consult each other about your problems and care.

Good luck at that first visit.
