I looked around on google and found some other forums where people also got ride-side pain from PPI's (like me). Yet they are all forums from years ago so I can't contact these people unfortunately to find out what they had...

After getting right side pain from Ranitidine and Prilosec, I am now getting it while on Nexium (for just two days - I was on Nexium in the past for 1+ years and didn't get this symptom).

My dr. wants me on Nexium for a PH test. But I can't put up with annoying right side pain, and worry that it is something serious like acute pancreatitis (though I tend to think it must be IBS related or something like that - I google to much and scare myself with what I read :)

When the PPI's work, they give me the right side pain (when they don't, like Prevacid, they don't give me the right side pain).

I have no idea what to do...I can't be on any PPI's that work for me it seems....Ill take the advice some on the forum have given me and change docs.

But really, nobody has had this side-effect before? I am surprised I am the only one, its like clockwork....2 days on a PPI that works for me, and my right side is feeling it....

I'm sorry to hear that you're getting symptoms with PPI's. I've taken them for years, and had no symptoms like that, so I can't help you.

Have you tried Protonix (it comes generic as well) to see if it gives you the same symptoms? That has to be very frustrating. I agree, though, that a second opinion is in order. I switched GI docs and found one too took me seriously, and listened with respect to what I was saying.

I hope you find an answer soon. Perhaps other members have experienced something like that. Hopefully you'll find some answers here.

I have never tried protonix or even seen a generic version. Where do you buy the generic version?

You can get it prescribed, and if your doc doesn't check the DAW box, it will be filled as a generic drug. (much cheaper)

Try h2 blocker , zantac or the like see if that works. The reality of pii and other things you put in your stomach is that they travel beyond the stomach but this may not be the problem. H2 blockers attack the problem differently and perhaps they wont bother you as much as ppi.

Hey acidrefluxman,

You may want to have a HIDA scan done to see what your gallbladder is functioning at. You may have Biliary dyskinesia which would cause those type of symptoms. There has been a study that suggests PPI's may cause Biliary dyskinesia (which is low-functioning gallbladder).

Am having the same symptoms...missed a couple of doses of my meds and the side pain went away...although the acid was back in full...any ideas...have tried prilosec, ranitidine, and pantoprazole..

I play alot of golf and thought this wholle time it was a muscle strain...have been going through it for awhile now and at the beginning had an ultrasound on the right side that didnt show anything...

I'm open to some ideas...

You may want to ask you pharmacist if side pain is a side effect of PPIs ?

If the pain went away when you were off the med it does not sound like GB but your Dr. may be able to help you out.

I guess these drugs cause undigested food to travel on into the small intestine, so they may just be causing some irritation.

Random thought; do you eat differently on ppis?! I know if I manage to take a ppi (they work but give me other side effects) then my stomach is pretty good and I may then start to chance some coffee etc. Just a thought that it could be an indirect effect.

It is very frustrating I know; the drugs work pretty well so when you complain about side effects they give you withering looks.

I agree with the above suggestion to try ranitidine; you could try it in combination with a lower dose of ppi to see if you get maximum benefit with minimum side effect.

ranitidine is what I am on now...twice a day...as far as eating goes if I am on my meds I can eat anything without heartburn...can't eat a saltine cracker off of the meds...talked to the doc and they said to try omeprazole (prilosec) and the acid was worse with the same side effects...

Another thing... I know beer is a trigger for some
but yet when I'm out golfing and have a couple of beers the side pain will slightly go away...anyone ever heard if that...

Also what kind of doctor specializes in this sort of thing...noone at my local clinic knows an fn thing about gerd or frequent heartburn.

Hey Hort,

Finally, someone else who experiences the same thing :)

It has been a year since I have had it and I still have the right side pain when I go on almost any pill now (including acidophilous, digestive enzymes, and other natural stuff). It goes away when I am not taking anything. Right now I am off and on with GERD without taking any pills other than Align, which actually helped take away my right side pain at one point.

Long story short after check ups and ultrasounds, etc., I have decided to let the right side pain be. You would be surprised how many people online have been dealing with that type of pain for years without any answers...in my case I have decided to let it be. I am confident all tests will always come back fine, so I don't see any reason in pushing for more of them for now.

It IS tough fighting on two fronts though, side pain and GERD. I got the side pain with ranitidine, etc. as well as nexium and PPI's. Good luck in your search for the cause and I hope to stay in touch should one of us find something out. I had all tests done save for a HIDA scan, which I don't think is worth it since I doubt its gallbladder related.

Hey thanks for the response...yah I have been with the annoyingness since April of 09 (when my ultrasound was done)...I just thought it was a strained muscle...is that how yours feels?

Does yours hurt constant...mine seems to get better for a bit after eating/drinking...I dont have any pain in the morning until after that first pill...

Taking 2 rantiadine a day currently.

heres a good one...talked to my pharmacist about the issue with the ranitidine, and she informs me that she has done extensive research on the drug and has never come across that side effect (no pun intended)...so i tell her that i did a 5 second search on google and found someone with the same symptoms...what a joke

Sorry I didn't reply sooner...

The pain I got was almost like a swollen organ which cramped up or a muscle which cramped up. it definitely felt like cramping though. All tests always came back normal. I am now struggling w/ GERD without being on anything other than Align. The right side pain actually began happening when I took any pills soon thereafter (even just digestive enzymes, for example), and now I occasionally get it on and off but nowhere near what it was like before...just a slight discomfort once a week or so to remind me its there. I am not too worried about it and really think its just my intestine or IBD or something.

It was a very particular discomfort though...I wouldn't really call it a "pain" b/c it wasn't that painful...just a throbbing of something in my URQ which would steadily get worse while I was on the medication, until I'd stop taking it after 1.5-2 weeks usually, and it would subside thereafter a few days later.

Does that sound like yours? Actually...I found others with the same on google as well, but in forums where they were long gone so I couldn't talk to them.

I've had this on and off for the 5 years I've been on PPIs! I had ultrasounds because I thought it was my gallbladder or liver. They were always clear. For months at a time it never bothers me but does come back now and then. I didn't have it prior to taking PPIs

mine for the most part feels like someone is pushing 2 fingers into my right side...not hard yet not to soft...more of an annoyance then anything...and yet i was trying to stretch it all this time and it felt like a pulled muscle...my annoyance is located straight right of my belly button, 3/4 of the way to my side.

mine is right at the base of my ribs, and would make me think gallbladder if that hadn't been ruled out (and my symptoms have no relation to what/when I eat). Mine doesn't feel like yours though, it feels like a cyclical cramping/throbbing of something on the inside (or even the muscle). When I push in hard I never feel anything or any pain though...

@ Hort. Funny, mine began in May 2010 about 3 weeks after starting Ranitidine. It does seem to come on stronger when I haven't drank any water for a while...my dr. thinks I just have visceral hypersensitivity. At this point I don't know what to do and am just waiting and seeing. I still get it even though I am only on Align now. I am DYING of reflux but can't take Ranitidine given the side effect. It isn't just there...it generally gets worse the longer I am on the drug (same w/ Nexium, etc.)

Just a thought; could your URQ pain be around the position of the ileocaecal valve? I've been reading stuff today that says you need this valve to work properly for the LES to close. Don't know how reliable the info is, but you might want to google "hernia + ileocaecal valve" (even if you don't have a hernia - just to read the info).

Your pain sounds higher up than this, but just thought I'd mention it in case it's radiating from there.

I have free flowing bile after a gall bladder removal about 16 years ago but my gall bladder had been getting bad since I was a kid. I've ALWAYS had the pain in my right side that you talk about. My sister has the same thing. She also had GB surgery. I had it before the surgery and it continues this many years later.

I also have hiatal hernia, severe GERD, gastritis, esophagitis, a wide open LES (diagnosed with in-hospital tests), diverticulosis and have had multiple esophageal strictures which the GI stretched during EGD.

Sometimes even smaller HHs can cause big problems especially when the LES ends up blown open as happened to me in the last 6 mos. It's all connected.

My ileocaecal valve doesn't close properly either but we think it is from the force of my food going through me so quickly with the LES open most of the time for a long time.

Barium swallow tests didn't indicate the LES problem. It took the in-hospital testing with the tubes down my nose into my stomach.

is it possible that it could be muscle related...the reason i ask is that some side effects of ppi's and acid reducers in general are muscle pain and muscle twitching...i mean if all tests are normal what else can it be?
