I Had Multichannel intraluminal impedance testing and this is what happened

i had a Multichannel intraluminal impedance which came back positive for abnormal reflux episodes in the proximal (upper part) of the esophagus, these were mostly weakly acidic , i showed this test to the GI doctor and he said reflux wasnt my problem and that he didn't know why i had these symptoms, he had no explanation for my posterior laryngitis, yellow saliva, dysphonia or sore throat after a while of trying to get a solution from him he says "it's psychological" im like ***, i told him i used nexium and a bunch of other meds and they didnt work then he said "if your problem was reflux the nexium shoulda fixed it" i guess he has never read the studies that say PPI's dont work for most people. I highly doubt the fact i have abnormal reflux episodes on the upper part of the esophagus and at the same time i have LPR symptoms is a coincidence, the dr i saw is supposed to be the best GI here, he wont perform surgery on me because i have a normal LES (pressure 12.7) i have a nonspecific esophageal motor disorder but he didn't pay any attention to that, im wondering when are the drs going to give me a solution when i have an ulcer in my throat, im sick of this, i feel sorry for all the people with LPR who get no relief, to know there is something wrong with you and not being able to get a cure from drs is one of the most frustrating things ever...

I hear you. I'm so sorry that you can't get your doctors to take you seriously. I have experienced very similar issues with atypical GERD symptoms. I was never diagnosed as LPR, but honestly, my symptoms were closer to that than to typical GERD.

I was extremely sick with very inflamed and asthmatic lungs for at least four years before the GI doc finally listened to me and my asthma and PCP docs (who were certain my reflux was creating my problem--making my lungs unresponsive to their treatment.

My reflux was also considered too mild to be causing problems for me. My GI doc sent me away after testing and said that reflux was not causing my asthma.

Finally 2 years later I was back again. The reflux was somewhat worse, although still within what is considered "normal" limits. My asthma doc says that it takes only a minute amount of acid to cause havoc with lungs.

The esophagus, lungs, and vocal chords were not made to tolerate acid or bile reflux, and it doesn't take much to irritate them.

I was also on 40mg Protonix twice a day, and it did not stop my symptoms.

Have you found an excellent ENT to check out your vocal chords?

You know there is always the second opinion. If you have good insurance, that would be a very helpful route to take.

Denise always provides the best answers!!! She and I had similar atypical symptoms and went through much to get diagnosed.
My answer...find a new doctor; this one sounds like a jerk. I had a good GI, but he admitted I was beyond his abilities..I live in Michigan and ended up at Cleveland Clinic...find a new doctor!

thanks for responding you guys, i've seen a lot of doctors 5 ENT'S and like 6 GI's, GI'S wont perform any type of surgery on me because i have a LES pressure that's inside of the normal limits, medication doesnt work i really dont know what to do, i read somewhere it's possible to have reflux because of transient lower esophageal sphinter relaxations and those wont show up on a manometry, maybe that's what happens with people with LPR and normal motility like me, not sure. Of the reflux episodes i had during the impedance testing 100.0% acid, 72.1% non acid and 100.0% weakly acid reached the proximal part of my esophagus, considering that was the highest sensor im guessing all of those episodes reached my throat idk how far is the proximal esophagus from the throat but i think they are almost next to each other...

Wish I could tell you. My last PH test was that type of monitoring, however after going through all of it I was told that the computer had a virus, and they couldn't get any information from it. I'd had two other PH tests, but this one was a horror, with constant spasms and pain. It wasn't because of the wire, but because I'd had my manometry and endoscopy on the same day, and they'd taken MANY biopsies. What a bummer that they couldn't use the results.

Anyway...I agree with Janice. Perhaps a center like Cleveland Clinic or Mayo would have experience with LPR issues. I certainly understand your frustration. I wish you all the best.

My allergist says that GI docs just don't think about the damage that a small amount of acid can do to lungs. My DeMeester score was 14, but I did have the surgery because my lungs were so, so bad that it was life threatening. The surgery has helped my lungs tremendously. I do have very bad allergies, and my lungs react to them, but most of the reflux affects have been mitigated by the surgery. I had the Nissen. It took about 2 and a half months to clear my lungs, but once that time had passed my lungs were better than they had been for at least the past four years.

i wish i could go for surgery but drs wont touch me with a 12.7 mmHg LES pressure and meds dont work, i'm scared im wondering will they take me serious when i have an ulcer in my throat?
