I have had two 24 hr. PH's. Neither has convinced doctors to consider surgery...the first confirmed acid reflux, and the 2nd didn't (although I was on Nexium during the 2nd...and was supposed to be...although I did stop taking it a few days prior and had my normal reflux symptoms, although they were not correlated to acid reflux).
I am seriously considering getting another PH done while not on meds since I am off meds now and foresee being so, to make sure I am not killing myself.
My heartburn has no relation to food, and in fact my most recent GI thought it probably wasn't heartburn until I came out bad on a motility test, which would be the result either of a connective tissue disease or longstanding GERD, and it was shown that I didn't have the former.
My heartburn is a pain that comes and goes 5-10 times during the day for 2-5 minutes each time generally, aside from really bad days. I don't feel the sour acid in my erophagus or anything, it is instead just a pain on behind my left pectoral muscle near the breastbone. A knawing pain...
I wonder how long it will take to develop Barrets. I am only 27 and have had this for 3 years, though was able to keep it under control for the first two. I am not a candidate for surgery and have bad reactions to meds so haven't been on any treatment.
I'll have periods where the pain will go away for weeks but it always comes back and stays for even longer. It has no correlation at all to what I eat...and actually I eat super healthy save for once a week trips to a Chinese Buffet. When I go there I don't get heartburn at all and generally I can count on my days that I eat lunch at the buffet to be heartburn free, at least until late evening. I'll eat 100% protein at the buffet, generally all shrimp and mussels and some vegetables.
Aside from the Chinese Buffet I eat 100% healthy, lots of fruit and vegetables, and try to make sure that I give my body the best chance to avoid Barrets and cancer of all types. I also follow rather rigid food combining rules and try to eat a lot of my food raw (fruits and vegetables). Aside from seafood I don't eat meat.
Dr's don't understand my GERD at all, but since in the past Ranitidine and PPI's took it away it has been confirmed as GERD, as well as the general motility issue that I have as a longstanding consequence of GERD.
Anyone with any insight/advice out there? I am such an atypical case that I find no answers and keep struggling, month after month, for years. I just try to believe my wife, that this GERD won't end up killing me and that one day it will just be a bad memory of my/our past.
Thank you all and god bless.
