Hi all
Rita- the pain from the swelling did feel different than the incision pain for me. for me it was about 4 weeks before i could go without some type of pain meds, well at least the first one. the redo was much longer but i had a bad complication.
Sandi- thanks for the kind words. you fit right in with this family of ours. i try my best to get some of our cooler air to you! i just got home from a friends campsite and its 60 with a nice dew settling in.

I had a good time tonight at the camp. told some old stories and picked a lot of bluegrass songs. i love to sit by a camp fire and pick guitars.

Hi All

I hope everyone is doing well & have had a wonderful weekend.

Well just wanted to report that it has been snowing for most of the day & it is still snowing. I know this is nothing unusual to you guys who experience these kinds of weather extremes every winter but in my little corner of the world where it hardly ever snows (maybe once every 5 or 6 years in the central South Island where my home town is) its a big deal. We have had two big snow storms in the last 3 weeks & its not looking good for tomorrow either so will probably be another day indoors by the fire with my knitting.

Sorry for complaining just don't cope well with the cold.

Wow,  snow - I wonder if it looks different in your land than in ours..........it would be so cool to see it !  I am making a bucket list and so far I have New York City and Sitka, Alaska on my list, oh yes and the New England states.  :)

My week-end was quiet but last evening we went to my granddaughters for birthday ice cream cake and the girls had picked up sugar free, fat free dilly bars for me.  We played cards as Gma came in last so they giggled.  Well someone has to lose and it can't be one of them.  cool Amy heads back to Kentucky on a 7:00 PM flight tonight.  It was sweet to have her home and she only has one week left of school and then she will be driving home.

Sandi,  I wish I could be in Las Vegas for the iHEARTRADIO MUSIC FESTIVAL.  I still crank up the volume for Dirt Road anthem.  I love to drive my car and listen to the music.  "On the road again"

Hey Bill,  I am so glad to hear you had fun at the camp site tonight.  Make sure you are really nice to them bears.  You will get far with honey so make sure you always take a case along...............yehaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.  I am now off to make my lunch, oatmeal with honey.  I am just a rollin oat these days but I am down 3 1/2 pounds and have not had a drive in meal for 5 days so I am holding my own. Is the saying rollin oats gather no moss....lol ?

Joy,  I know you are spending all your energy in taking care of yourself and doing what you must to get through the day.  Just remember when your down  just look up and you will see all our faces cheering you on my awesome friend. Love you my gal friend.

Denise,  The weather has certainly changed and I do not expect we will have anymore high, high humidty or temps in the 3 digits but hope our fall is beautiful.  My daughters employee that does her laundry is taking some time off work so I will be helping do the laundry at the kennels for a while so if you see something that needs my attention in the forums shoot me an email and I will take care of it ASAP.  So back to work I go as a volunteer to help out my daughter. 

I still intend to get a vacation in before the snow falls here.  Thanks for your support as always and you know where to find me as .  I made it through 8/12 and was overwhelmed at how many of our special members here in this forum have experienced the same thing that I have.  God Bless each of them.

Rita,  I do hope things keep getting better for you each day.  I know I can wake up feeling awful, then feel better as the day gets longer and by evening I feel pretty darn good.  So keep on believing and know we are all here for you. I understand at times the pain of healing can be quite unbearable and then you have a really good day so I wish for you many good days. Blessings.

AS for me,  I am sticking to this heart healthy diet  as I do not want to deal with heart disease.

Thank you, guys for your kind thoughts. I guess I developed another side effect of the Lupus- mood swings.
I'm feeling better today. I even went for a quick trip to town and bought a 25 pound watermelon. The sunlight's left me feeling a little itchy though.
Last week was just a stressful week for me and I need to learn to just say "no" to others and myself. My workdays are: 5:45am wake up & get dressed, 6:45am go to work, 5pm (sometimes 5:30pm) go home & eat supper, 9:00pm go to bed to start it all over again.
It made me so angry on Friday when I told my co-workers that I have to leave school at 4:45pm everyday from now on and and on Fridays leave at 4pm. One of them said with a smerk, "that's only 15 minutes earlier". I told her that 15 minutes was so precious for me in feeling better. I have to be able to rest and unwind. This disease takes so much out of me at times.

Enough of me whining.

Just got back from seeing the surgeon,

We had a very nice visit. He told me I look fantastic on the outside but that it was going to take a long time to heal on the inside which I already knew.

I picked his brain so much I imagine he had a headache by the time I left but he did order the 24 hour oxygen monitor which will be brought out tomorrow. The CPAP people are bringing out an Auto-pap and I'm going to try it out. It's been about a week since I tried my CPAP and my husband's Auto-pap but couldn't endure the pressure in my chest and abdomen.

He told me to use my own judgment about eating but to stay away from steak and bread - two things I could never eat again and it wouldn't bother me so that's good. Also said I could start driving again but I still don't really want to or feel like it so I'm not worried about that either.

I do think I may have dumping syndrome and that I probably had it before the surgery as well. It seems to have developed after my gall bladder removal nearly 17 years ago and I guess now that the reflux is gone I can concentrate on getting the dumping and the sleep apnea under control. LOL If it's not one thing it's another.

All in all I'm pleased and looking forward to better days.

And I wish everyone here a good day as well.

After a few months u will be able to eat pretty much anything as long as you chew well. any solid meats will give u problems for a while. i am having issues with bread and solid meats right now. i am sure its because the wrap has Slipped and also the hole is off center.
joy- my neice really battles with mood swings. that is a nasty thing to have with all the side effects of it and meds. hope your week goes well and i can believe how that extra 15 mins wind down would b huge.
Kitt- unfortunately we dont have any bears here anymore. well, i guesss that might not b totally true. me and a hunting friend were sure we saw a bear cub a couple years ago. either that or the biggest groundhog on earth!
Tomorrow is upper gi day at 8am. wish i had the follow up this week instead of next monday. i justwant to get it scheduled and done.
Got to change my appointment at peoria too. since its the same day and time as my follow up here.
Also was offered a job today at farm and fleet. working in the warehouse.

Kitt - Yes the snow does look the same here as it does for you, white & cold but we don't see it often enough that's the problem. Actually it does look pretty this morning but I prefer to see it on a post card in a land far, far away LOL. Mustn't complain, cant do anything about it & at least I get another days rest from work which is good in terms of my recovery.

So happy you had a great evening with your granddaughters. It's precious moments like those that we treasure & helps keep our hearts warm & our bodies strong. I hope you get to have many more.

Joy - welcome back. So sorry to hear you have difficult co-workers to deal with when all your energy is being used up with healing. Some people just don't realize how exhausting it is when you are sick & yes 15 extra minutes is precious. Stick to your guns & keep saying no. They will eventually get the message!!!

You deserve much love & support, it's sad that your co-workers don't realize that so keep coming back to us because we all have an abundance of healing hugs to give. xxxxx

Rita - Good to hear your surgeons visit was so successful. Its a very positive step to hear that things are healing well & its good he is so helpful to get your breathing sorted & under control.

I had a lot of dumping in the 1st two weeks after surgery which I think was because of the liquid diet. I has gotten better lately but I still have the odd bout occasionally after I eat. Don't know why but it is manageable. Hang in there & I hope you have many more good days.

Bill - Good luck for your appt tomorrow. I hope it will help give you all the answers you need & the 22nd will be here before you know it so you will be able to move forward.

Also congratulations on the job offer. Is it doing work you enjoy & will your employers be supportive as you go through surgery & recovery?

I love camping so much. We would go camping every summer when my boys were growing-up. Fridays after work would load up the car & head to the lakes for the weekend. Fishing, relaxing, toasting marshmallows over the camp fire. I do miss the good old days. Now the boys take their own families which is good that they have made it into a tradition.

Denise & Sandi - I hope you are both doing well & your days are filled with sunshine.

Don't worry, that snow will melt and before you know it you'll be basking in the sun again (while we head toward our own bout with cold and snowy weather--those of us who live in the north-country, at least).

Our local weather man mentioned today that New Zeland is experiencing a blizzard right now. Of course, I thought of you when he said that!

You probably have a double whammy with the gallbladder removal issues on top of the Nissen surgery. It's very common to have some dumping during recovery. I'd always know when it was starting because I'd hear all that grumbling and gurgling.

Your surgeon's eating protocol sounds like mine. Be sure to take tiny bites and chew your food to a liquid. You shouldn't have any trouble if you do that. As your wrap becomes more swollen you'll likely find yourself backing off a bit on solids, but once that swelling goes down you will be right back at it.

You need to take care of yourself. Try not to let the attitudes of your co-workers bother you. Consider the source. Do what YOU have to do to stay healthy. I hope you're feeling better today. I think the first month of school is very hard. It takes time to get strong again. I remember doing fine as long as I didn't sit down and let down. Then I'd be ready to go right to sleep.

Retirement was what allowed me to make the move to be close to our kids. I loved teaching, but I love my family even more! I get my "teaching fix" when I go once a week to help out in my son's third grade class. I've been helping him get his room set up a well. I also tutor once a week.

We had our little guy today as his father (our son) need to help his brother-in-law with a flooded business. We haven't had rain for two months and yesterday it rained nearly two inches. We had fun with him, but he did wear me out. He likes Grandma best when he's tired or need comforting. Grandpa is for being silly and having fun!

It's so nice that you have your granddaughters close enough to spend time with when they're not at school. A birthday celebration is a great excuse to get together.

Sounds like you're working on getting that cholesterol down. Good job! I have my physical on Wednesday. We shall see! I wish my allergist could actually improve my allergies. He just changed my serum, but that takes months to see if it helps. Maybe (hopefully) it'll help next year. My cough gets me down sometimes. It just wears me out. Oh well...there are people with much worse to deal with. Suck it up, Denise!

I hope you do get a vacation in soon. You would love the New England states. They are beautiful, and it's one of my favorite destinations. The leaves are beautiful in fall!

Glad you had fun at camp. I'll bet it's fun to be with you when you're playing your guitar while sitting around the campfire. Like Lynda, I also grew up camping, and we took our kids camping every year as well. I love it.

I'll finish my post now.....dumb phone! I am at the library and can use the laptop.

The job offer is good until I am able to work after surgery. The store manager said she wants me in her store with all the experience of farm and auto and such. It's a part time job that will work great for me. She said once I have a surgery date to call her and keep her in the loop for when I can start work. She is holding my paperwork to push through when I can start, even if it's 6 to 8 weeks. She said it doesn't matter. They usually only get teens and early twenties people to apply for this position and since I am older she really wants me there.
Well the barium swallow went as it usually does. Not leaks still, which is good. My surgeon was wanting to double check that. The radiologist also said there is no hesitation when I swallowed the barium it went straight into my stomach. He said other than that things look good. He said it confirms a wide open LES they saw on the EGD. I actually had the tech and doc who did both of my previous ones when I went to the ER. They both said I am coming in for this way too often and get it fixed so I can stop coming in for this. LOL! It's bad when they remember you.

I did try some rice last night, not a good thing. First 2 bites got stuck, pushed through with water...ouch! then wasn't smart enough to stop there tried 2 more times with same results. So rice is off the menu, solid chicken and beef are off too along with soft bread. I feel like I already had the repair and have started the recovery, besides the nasty reflux I have that is.

My family has always been an outdoors family. the tent pops up in minutes we do it so much. We would much rather be in the woods than anywhere else. We do have a great time pickin around the fire. I know alot of silly songs that get things going for some more serious songs later. then for some reason they all want to here the story of the ghost girl several times. It always gives me chills when I sing it. It was written from a twilight zone episode. A little girl is picked up by a stranger and drives her to her house, but when they get there she's not in the car. And while he is looking for her, her mother comes out and thanks him for giving her a ride and tells him she died 13 years ago today and he is the 13th one to bring her home.

I hope I never again have to drink that nasty gastricview stuff. I can handle barium, but the other has to go!

Everyone,
I did pretty well today at work, except I've caught a sore throat from one of the kids. The doctor told me I'd be subceptable to germs with this medicine. :( I keep coughing and clearing my throat and then go hoarse. It's a flashback to my pre-surgery days! :O
I didn't start feeling really bad until 4:00, after the kids went home.

Bill, my form of roughing it is not sleeping in my own bed at home. I hate being away from the comforts of home.

Isn't it so great to hold them and hug them and feel them just give up to sleep and know that they trust you to keep them safe and sound.. such an awesome responsibility... and they always want Gramma when they are tired.. cause Gramma makes them feel good... IT'S WHAT WE DO!!!!!

My husband has given me the task of getting his cholesterol down too. I keep telling him I can't do it all, that he has to watch his intake while I am at work.. HAHA like that is gonna happen.. if you come up with any good low cholesterol recipes let me know.... so glad you enjoyed your family time...

I am happy to hear that you are no longer having to cope with the horrors of GERD and acid.. I am sorry that you are still experiencing problems with your breathing and apnea.. I pray that the doctors can hit on a solution that will leave you feeling well and sleeping even better

I have been having a bit of an issue with some after dinner nausea.. no pain and nothing else just nausea after dinner and first thing in am until I can burp... This too shall pass..

Hi Bill,

Well you've got that test behind you. Hopefully your follow-up with the surgeon goes well.

I grew up camping, and we took our own kids camping every summer for many years. I remember camping at 9 months pregnant...friends went with us, and she still brings it up...wondering how I slept on the ground in that condition!

I have many very fond memories of camping over the years. We haven't camped for quite a while now, though. My husband doesn't want to do it any more...he has become more of a cottage/hotel kind of guy as he's gotten older. I think he agrees with Joy!

I'm glad to hear you've got a job lined up for after your surgery. I'm sure you'll be a real asset to the store. They're lucky to get you, and it sounds like they know it.

Sorry to hear you're under the weather. Do you get allergies this time of year? Could that be part of the problem? My allergies have been terrible. Around here we get a little break in July...they aren't all gone, but the pollen count is lower. Now we're getting into Ragweed/fall weeds/mold and it is a bad time for me. My new allergist is strengthening my serum and adding more, so hopefully that helps.

This time of year is such a challenge for teachers--particularly first grade teachers! Be sure to persist in getting out of there and getting home to rest. There is always so much to do, I know. Hang in there! Everything will settle down at school in about 6 weeks. It'll fly by, too.

We spent the afternoon with our little grandchild and our son. It was fun! Our little one is teething, and he seems to want to be carried more than ride in the stroller. Denise, I get allergies all year round unfortunately. My allergiest won't give me allergy shots because I keep having asthma attacks after them. After treating me for two bad reactions he told me he was scared to try it again.

Sorry everyone that I'm not one here more, but I'm so tired lately. I'll get in more when I have more energy.

Hi, Joy.

Just rest and relax and get your strength back!

Do you take a maintenance inhaled steroid? I used to have terrible trouble with my allergy shots before steroid inhalers started being made available. I'm sorry to hear you can't take shots (did you ever get a second opinion about that?). I know they help, and I can't imagine how I would be without them.

Allergies year-round is enough reason to be exhausted. I'm worn out with them from just April through early November! At least I have the relief of winter and snowstorms covering the pollen for a few months!

Hope school is going well. What is your class like?

Denise, I'm on advair year round. My allergist is considered the very best in his field. I've had other doctors praise him. He's the first doctor I went to who said I had GERD and he's the one who discovered I had lupus.
I've got the sweetest bunch of kids this year. I think my principal took pity on me and gave me a good bunch, because the last three years I've had some holy terrors! :O They're a bunch of tender hearts, helpful, good manners, and eager to please. I'm in teacher heaven! :))

I'm glad you've got a good class this year! That should help a lot as you get stabilized with meds and cope with your new health challenges. You're lucky there was a good class to be had...they're few and far between.

I spent the day helping my son get his classroom ready. I did a lot of the work last night in preparation. I came home with more homework to do. I enjoy helping me. It gives me my teacher fix!

Hope you continue to feel better and gain energy.

You were very astute to realize it was needed right now.

I posted earlier but it only left the smiley face for some reason. once again ...dumb phone!
Anyhow, got into c my surgeon this aftternoon instead of monday. my surgey is scheduled for next wednesday at 2pm i have to b there at noon. he asked if it came down to eating soft food for ever or what im going through now what would i choose. i choose soft foods. he said there is absolutely no slow down of the barium at the valve. he said he wont know exactly which repair until he gets in ther. he said it might be a partial of full depending on how viable my stomach is. he also said if it wont work he will close me up and send me to ic for esophagectomy using my colon. he also said trying to go though my chest.scar tissue.would b.like going through concrete. my whole family trusts this surgeon. he explains everything in human language.

I know he will do what is best for me. he expects a.4 to 5 hour surgery so i figure by time they get going and recovey time ill get.to icu about 8pm or so. probably not get fully awake til 4 or 5 am if things go as usual. i love the way he sits with u and explains every scenario. he even scheduled it on a day he usually does office only so we can get it done sooner. his words as for the swallow test was it looked like i had a funnel at the less it went through so fast.
A bit more worried about a 3rd one when i already had complications from the.first redo and he has to undo my stomach from my belly wall also. but i am only 15 mins from home. he tried to get me in tomorrow but it was too late to make a big schedule.change. he figures ill b out of work about 4 to 6 weeks. his nurse told me when i left" ill c u in about 3 weeks" she so nice. and has gone way beyond to get me.appointments witb him..after 3.5 years we have gotten to know each other well

Well got tired of the dang phone and the library has wifi that reaches the parking lot. HEHE!
So I am at a 5 day countdown. Hope I can keep myself busy so it flies by. Of course I have to be NPO from midnight on and I don't check in til noon. I hate that! Guess I'll stay up late and sleep all morning. Unfortunately Michelle is no longer on weekend shift and she has to work that day. think she is going to take a half day off.
I am so anxious to get this fixed and pray the stomach is viable for one more wrap. Really looks like it slipped down and is just blocking everything after the LES. I saw he a;ready ordered an NG tube, Oh I am SO happy about that! Also ordered an arterial monitor. I am going to request a PICC line right away. don't want to mess with multiple IVs. Another triple lumen wold be just fine for me.

Hope everyone has great plans for the weekend. I am going to spend a lot of time at camp I think.

I am right here and reading every word.  Sometimes I just am lost was what to write so I keep my mouth  redface shut and just read but I am always thinking of each of you and praying for your healing as well as enjoying your sharing of the good in your lives.

Bill,  I am sure glad you learned the trick of parking outside the library..........you sneaky guy you !  My son taught me this years ago as he used to do that when he was on the road traveling with his lap top.  He would park in lots near Hotels etc.   He now has his own USB card :-) !!

Right now I am sure you are having lots of up and down feelings as you are waiting for surgery.  Third times a charm remember ! I know you are a  strong person, but it is ok to be  nervous about the unknown, in fact you are very normal to have fears.  Remember it is a good thing to let out your fears and sharing  your problems is like halving them so if you feel the need we are right here for you our "good ole friend"

I am glad to see you posting away as I suspect it is keeping you busy !

I will be back shortly to catch up with all of you !

Denise,  Thank you for all your messages and for your support.  I am feeling a bit sorry for myself and yet I am determine to stick to my eating plan.  I need to find a bit more variety in this low cholesterol diet business.  Of course like many the stock market is scaring the bejeezus out of me and even thow I try not to look it is hard not to hear the daily doom and gloom.

 

On the upside I am going uptown to get my haircut today............a present to myself.  My hubby is going to spend the afternoon with his Dad so I will have some spa time -  I am looking forward to relaxing and the neck massage.

 

Joy,  the school week is almost over - are you still swinging on your moods.  I hope things are chilling out for you.  Glad to hear the children are a good fit for you.  I understand only to well how hard it can be to work with snippy, difficult people. I had a "good" friend for 20 years at work.  This friend always felt she could make comments (snide) to me as we were, after all, friends and I never objected as I don't like conflict.  One day she stepped over the line and made a snide comment about my daughter.  I never said another word outside of business to her from that day forward.  I divorced her and she never knew what happened - giggle.

 

I have let it go now but it hurt at the time and it was sad as I had 20 years invested in the friendship. So life moves on.

 

Remember, I am here for you and keep that sense of humor. 

 

Sandi,  Morning kiddo ! How is your day going ?  It is finally Friday - well for those of us retired everyday is Friday turn It is so good to come here and see so many warm and caring friends in this forum.

 

Lynda,  I am with Bill - how is your recovery doing? You are always so thoughtful of others so please let us know how you are feeling.  I can sense that you are a strong person but we all need to have a hand to hold even here in the forum.

 

Rita,  I see you posting to other members in the forum and such helpful posts they are.  Thank you for taking the time to greet newbies and share you knowledge and support with them. Hope you have some funfilled plans for the week-end.
