Help! Still have heartburn after having the TIF procedure 1 week ago!!

 Has anyone else had this happen?  My surgeon said we'll have to wait and see if it will work!  Anytime I eat anything I have heartburn.  I really feel very little difference.  He did a lap repair on a moderate sized hernia and then did the TIF.  I've been on an all liquid diet and limiting my portions.  I weigh less than 120lbs so being overweight is not an issue. My GE did not want me to have the TIF because he didn't belive in the technology.  He wanted me to have the regular fundlipilication.  I was concerned about the recovery and the description of the surgery.

    Has anyone else also continued to have heartburne.  I still take famotodine everytime I eat and xantac everyday.

The swelling from the surgery is causing leaks right now. Wait for the swelling to go down. It will take about three weeks.

I had the TIF 4 months ago and went off Nexuim at 2 weeks. I had severe acid reflux and went back on Nexium. I continued to feel like I had reflux although it was much less for 3 months. At 3 months I went off Nexium and for 3 days it felt like reflux and then it seemed to stop. I seemed better than when I was on Nexium. The second ambulatory pH test showed that my reflux had gone from 28.4 (over 20 is severe) to 5.8, about normal. My surgeon has done over 60 TIFs and he commented that I was the only person that had done the second pH test so he must of not had other concerns of reflux. Your diet is important to the success of the TIF. My surgeon stressed that it would take up to 3 months for the swelling to go down and for the TIF to work.

This is the thread I was looking for today. I so needed to find this. My surgery was 3 weeks ago (NF) and at first I felt the acid was better. Then as I started eating things besides liquids the acid has gotten progressively worse to the point that it's about all I can taste unless food is in my mouth.

I'm not overeating but I'm still in a lot of pain - have to put ice packs on the inside of my lower right rib area and I wake up with a ton of acid - really bitter tasting and a lot of saliva in my mouth evidently trying to neutralize it.

I called my surgeon about taking my old PPI for a while and he said that would be fine. I took one yesterday and the acid is worse today than it has been since before the surgery.

I don't know the difference in TIF and NF or if the swelling from the surgery could affect them the same way but I have bad anxiety and I'm getting pretty upset about the whole thing wondering if I made a mistake or not.

I am better when I take an anxiety pill but I can't live on them and the only relief I get is the ice pack and sitting up all night.

I have sleep apnea as well and can't wear my machine now because of the extra pressure it puts on my stomach and so I'm wearing down quickly. I used to be able to escape the acid and pain pre-surgery by sleeping but now I'm not sleeping but about 4 hrs a night and then something - sleep apnea and/or acid wakes me up and I cannot breathe.

Don't have any idea what I'm going to do.
I'm about ready to toss it in and quit.
This has gone on for 11 years.

I don't know what to do now . . .

Rita, the swelling can cause leaks for awhile. Stress isn't helping you either. Go back to the liquid diet and only eat 1/2 cup to 2/3 cup of food every 2-3 hours. Stay on that for about four days then try pureed foods or mushy food.

Did you experience leaks or are you speaking from what you've heard from others? The most pain I've ever had from acid was this morning. It is not something I can continue with if it doesn't stop.

I'll go back to liquids and see what happens. I'm not very confident at this time and my surgeon acts as if he's never heard of anything like this.

I never thought I'd be this sick after the surgery.

Yes, I did have leaks as well as others here have posted over the last few years I've been here.
My surgeon told me to wean off of the PPIs slowly over several weeks and if I had problems to slow down on the more solid foods for awhile. He said not to rush the more solid foods and to follow his strict diet for more success.
4 weeks liquids
2 weeks pureed
2 weeks soft
2 weeks easing into harder foods leaving raw veggies, steak, and bread for last things to introduce.
