Actually it's an interesting read generally on the subject of GERD as well as LPR. The author is pointing out that the "acidification" of food and drink (to keep it germ free) coincides with the surge in the development of acid reflux

It's a great article isn't it? I don't have LPR but I still found it very interesting on the general subject of reflux. I was thinking if you try to have organic food where possible and use fresh basic ingredients (no tins or packets) then that might reduce a lot of the dietary acid they refer to. Then it comes down to following their advice re fruit etc. And no fizzy drinks of course . . . . though I'm pretty sure most folk on this forum gave up fizzy drinks long ago!

Let us know how you get on if you decide to implement any of the dietary changes.

When you say "alkaline fruits" are you thinking of the naturopathic acid/alkaline theory? The low acid diet referred to in the scientific paper on LPR is different to the "acid-alkaline balancing" naturopathic diet concept. The above paper talks about the pH of food - that is the pH of it as it hits your stomach. They say only bananas and melon have a suitable pH. Whereas in the acid-alkaline balancing concept (which I think involves a fair amount of pseudo-science relating to "acid ash residues" etc) they say fruit is alkalising because although it is acid when it hits the stomach the final 'end product' is alkaline.

I have studied naturopathic nutrition in quite a lot of detail (but am no longer a practising therapist) and I really never could accept the whole 'acid residue' theories. I know from painful experience that it's the pH of the food as it lands in my stomach that affects my gastritis........

Sorry for the blurb - just thought I'd make the distinction between the two concepts in case you'd already come across the naturopathic version of acid/alkaline (not that I'm against naturopathy - quite the reverse!).

Glad to hear you like my new motto..............I am liking it to.  It reminds how much I can do with lots of determination and hard work on my own.
