Hi All,
I am 11mths post Nissen and am in the strange limbo-like situation of having reflux symptoms, but being told by the doctors that all is ok. By symptoms I mean burning in the chest/discomfort in the centre of the back, an unpleasant hot gurgle at the wrap site after swallowing and, most troubling, the LPR hoarseness that drove me to the Nissen in the first place, with gritty feeling phlegm that requuires regular throat clearing. The LPR symptoms were better for a time after the op, but seem to have crept back in, particularly after some recent exertion in the gym (abs work) and swimming. I am considering having another 24hr PH test to see if things have changed in there.
However, I have my suspicions over how accurate the 24hr test is, as the one I had done a few months back showed no reflux, despite my symptoms. Does anyone know how accurate and reliable that test is? Does it show even small levels of reflux that might aggravate a senstive esophagus? In May I went to the leading hospital in London to have the test done, so I believe they know what they are doing. I just find it very hard to reconcile the results of the test with my symptoms, which, while better than pre op, are still present.
I recall other post fundo patients commenting that they had negative 24hr study results ie no reflux but still had symptoms, so am v interested in your views.
Also, has anyone considered/had esophageal sensitivity tests done? I wonder whether I am hyper sensitive which may account for some of the chest/back discomfort. My GI dr said that even vapour from the stomach can irritate a sensitive esophagus.
With regard to exercise, my wrap site and the area to the left and right were sore after the abs work/swimming I did in the gym. This is surprising after 11 months have passed since the Nissen. Has anyone else experienced this discomfort after working out, especially so long after the op?
Finally, anyone else have this hot "gurgle" around the wrap each time a swallow makes its way down? It's driving me nuts...
Thanks!!
