I was wondering if anyone ever experienced a lot of belching with gerd,and if this can be from taking prilosec,i read where acid deficiency could cause belching.But i am constantly belching all day long,and i was wondering if this was a symptom of gerd.

Belching is definitely a sympton of GERD but if it is not that often and persistant you may just have a case of heartburn. Actually the antacid should alleviate it, not cause it. If you have persistent symptoms, you may need to check with your doctor. Do you have pain as well as belching?

Thank you for your response.I belch all day but there is no pain.The reason i said prilosec might be causing some of it is cause i read acid deficiency causes belching,and prilosec shuts off acid pumps.But i belch an awful lot and the other night when i was sleeping i must have belched and acid came up cause i woke up choking.A lot of my belching is powerful burps too,is this a symptom of gerd,and is it this bad for others?

The antacids do shut down the acid pumps so that it calms down the overactive acids that travel up your esophagus which result in "wet" belching which is GERD.

Normal "air" belching is just a release of gases in your stomach that are trapped and are going to come out that way or travel the other way eyes

I'm not sure if the antacids cause more than usual "air" burping, I haven't noticed an increase in myself with taking Prevacid.  It may be the medicine type, I would suggest asking your doctor.  Not all antacids are alike.

I don't know about the powerful burps... I'm assuming that you mean the earth shaking kind (LOL  :-)   )  I get those after a big glass of soda tongue .

So belching is definitely a symptom of gerd.Is it normal though to do it often throughout the day,or is that just what comes along with this gerd thing?Because it is really bothersome to have that feeling of air there all the time,and any advice on how to alleviate it

I don't know if the excessive belching is caused by the GERD or the medication. I personally do not have the belching while on my medication. I would ask your doctor about going on a gas med therapy (i.e. Gas-X) or maybe changing your PPI. If you just started noticing the belching increasing after you started taking the prilosec, it sounds like it may be the culprit. Maybe someone else will identify your symptoms with there own and be able to help you.

Thanks,i don't know whats causing it either.I have been on prilosec for 2 years,i always experienced some sort of gas from it,but never belching like this.It is weird though because thats the only symptom of gerd i have.I haven't had heartburn in 2 years,unless i missed taking my pills.But i must say it is not fun living with this,cause i get hungry at night but i am afraid to eat after 7,because i am afraid of air bringing food or acid up when i sleep.I am afraid of having stomach cancer.

Have you talked to your Dr. about this symptom? I do know that belching is an effect of GERD .. maybe your Prilosec is not working. Have you considered changing medicines?
