The antacids do shut down the acid pumps so that it calms down the overactive acids that travel up your esophagus which result in "wet" belching which is GERD.
Normal "air" belching is just a release of gases in your stomach that are trapped and are going to come out that way or travel the other way
I'm not sure if the antacids cause more than usual "air" burping, I haven't noticed an increase in myself with taking Prevacid. It may be the medicine type, I would suggest asking your doctor. Not all antacids are alike.
I don't know about the powerful burps... I'm assuming that you mean the earth shaking kind (LOL ) I get those after a big glass of soda .
