how do you get a doc to check for this?  since last night when i bend over, i hvae a pinching pain in the middle of my stomach and have been having a lump in my throat type feeling and sometimes like i could throw up. 

anyone had this and know what it feels like?  my doctors never do any tests for GERD and it makes me crazy.  they just push pills.  since i'm having costochondritis again i dont want to take any ibuprofen since i don't want t irritate this.

They can check for a HH with during an EGD or with a barium swallow also if I remember right. I also was told my HH was back after a CT to check the hole in my esophagus.

Have you been to a GI doctor yet?

i think barium swallow and endoscopy can test for hiatal hernia. But (small) hiatal hernia is not clinically linked to GERD. There are patients without hiatal hernia and still have GERD, and there are patients with hiatal hernia but does not have GERD.

Why not change to another doctor?

i went to a GI before for my b12 deficiency lately but my gerd wasn't acting up then.  he did a ton of bloodwork.  would something have shown up in them?  nothing he said in my bloodwork showed a reason why my body wasn't absorbing b12.

well i think my doc will send me for a test i ask for but he prob. won't recommend it. i'm going to see him today so i'll ask.

My wife has a B12 deficiency also. She gets injections once a month. Our PCP told us that some people just don't absorb B12 and didn't know why. She did ask if she ate red meat, according to her that is a good source of B12. My wife tried taking the supplement pills, bu they didn't work

My GI told me most people have a HH to some degree, but most never know it. I believe it is common practice to repair any HH, if present, when they do surgery for reflux. I am talking about the Nissen and similar surgeries.

I was diagnosed with esophagitis, hiatal hernia, and GERD in early 2008. I have since had a normal endoscopy despite symptoms and my Dr's have told me that the hiatal hernia I have is small and shouldn't be causing reflux...so I do think hh does not necessarily equate to GERD>

i was checked for hiatal hernia with a barium swallow (fluoroscopy)...it came up negative

4 months later during esophageal endoscopy the GI doc found a small hh

was it missed during first test? or did it develop later? worth a discussion with a doctor

my doctor says he thinks it is just a torn muscle in my stomach from the area it is. never felt this way before with a sore muscle. maybe a pulled muscle is different. it HURTS. and only when i move a certain way especially sitting in the car and bending over a certain way.

but he also put me on nexium for gerd.
