I Had My Upper Endoscopy This Morning

I'm glad you had a good experience.

The doc measured the esophagus in case there is a need for surgery in your future. If it wasn't long enough you could need either extensive mediastinal dissection or a Collis gastroplasty.

I wonder how the doc determined from just looking that the sphincter was weak?

I've done several endos, with and without meds. I have such an awful gag reflex that without just isn't fair to the doc. I refuse Versed and Fentanyl - one just makes you forget, has nothing to do with pain, the other makes me vomit for hours even with Zofran. I get only Propofol, wake up with my mind intact.

My doctor didn't say my esophagus was too short, he actually said it was in really good shape. I'm sorry to hear that you had a difficult time with your gag reflex, mine is pretty bad too =(... I'm not sure how the Dr. could tell that I had a slight weakness.

My symptoms were throat clearing, coughing, post-nasal drip, sticky saliva, and alot of mucus, and lots of belching. The coughing and throat clearing went away almost instantly with a double dose of prevacid. Some time later, I visited an ENT who scoped me and said my throat looks perfect, so I decided to cut back on the meds, which was a big mistake! I booked an endoscopy and started experiencing globus and throat tightening, along with intermittent throat clearing again. Now I am back on a double dose of prevacid. I know you're going for your endoscopy on the 14th, if you're worried don't be! I'm so anxious and I can honestly tell you that I would do it again tomorrow. As far as triggers, I need to be a bit more vigilant because I love my coffee and sweets, but do try to stick to a generally bland diet.
