I have been following these forums searching for an answer for over a year now, but until now have had nothing to add. Now I DO, and I am hoping that my journey will help others. YES, i have recovered from this!
I started having all of these symptoms about 15 months ago. Out of the blue. Started out very mild, then worsened and intensified. Clearing throat, sore throat, HUGE lump in throat (felt like a golf ball), feeling like I was being strangled, short of breath occasionally, like I couldn't get air, scratchy throat, dry tongue and throat like I was gagging, feeling weird sensations on my tongue and in my throat. Never any heartburn, but would regurgitate food into my throat at night. I had a neck ultrasound, neck CT, and throat scope. I was even in the ER with feeling like my airway was cut off. I tried EVERYTHING - Cut out dairy, researched food allergies, slept almost sitting up, not eating past 6 p.m., no alcohol, no chocolate, no onions, tried alkaline water and baking soda water, all the normal stuff. It was so out of the blue because I never had heartburn or reflux in my life. I did NOT take PPI's because they destroyed my body years ago when my doctor mistakenly thought I had an ulcer. I tried the Fast Tract diet and got maybe 50% better but I had to eat less than 5 FP per day, or the symptoms would come raging back. I went to my doctor and was diagnosed with SIBO and took 2 months of herbal antibiotics for that, along with the Fast Tract diet, which again helped some, but the symptoms were still there. Went to ENT and got a laryngoscopy and he said it looked like my throat was lit up with a torch, obviously LPR, most likely my sphincters were not working, but no one knew why. Was scheduled for an endoscopy.
Finally, I read an article, don't know where I found it, but I think on one of these forums, about a woman who increased her iodine and her LPR went away. I thought I have tried everything else, this is a long shot, but I knew my iodine was very low (32, normal is about 50-110 or in that range), and it had affected my thyroid, caused fibrocystic breasts, and was causing endometriosis. Since iodine is what keeps all the muscular functions running as well, I theorized that if it was low, possibly it was making my LES or UES not work as well, and since my LPR symptoms started around the same time as all my other symptoms, I thought it would make sense to try it. I started taking about 600 mcg with each meal, since I didn't want to overload or shock my system. I also added in selenium, which helps your body absorb and utilize the iodine.
My symptoms started to improve on the first day, and they have steadily improved ever since. I went from agony 2 weeks ago, to almost zero symptoms today. PLEASE, if you are suffering, get your iodine checked. I cannot believe the difference this has made for me.
Some other things I have done, which I believe have contributed to helping as well, were:
1. Identifying and treating SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)
2. Taking digestive enzymes - good ones with each meal.
3. Taking hydrochloric acid with pepsin (yes sounds counterproductive but I wasn't digesting my food correctly and needed it, if your thyroid or iodine is low you aren't making enough acid to digest your food)
4. Taking spray magnesium - I spray it on my abdomen every morning
5. Optimizing vitamin D levels
6. Taking Atrantil for constipation (being constipated slows everything down)
I hope this helps someone! I am going to post this on every forum I can find.
