Hi,

Does anybody here have trouble taking antibiotics?  I have two I can take without throwing my stomach into gastritis:  Amoxicillin and Z-Pack.  I was wondering if others here have had this difficulty, and if so, what antibiotics are least hard on the stomach lining.

When you're limited to two choices, I'm sure they will become less effective over time.

After my Nissen I ended up getting Rocephin shots (for a stubborn lung infection) to avoid getting my stomach going.  I feel like that route has to be saved as a last resort.

Am I the only one with this problem?

I can only take Keflex or Z-pack.

Levaquin has been consider by many as one of the "big gun" antibiotics over the years and both my hubby and my son have been on it.  My son long term - 6 months and my hubby in September for his bilateral pneumonia.  They both had nasty GI upsets from this med and with my hubby having Crohn's he lost weight but his pneumonia did resolve. In the hospital he received it IV and like you noted it bypass his gut so he tolerated it but home on the oral form made him miserable for the whole 7 days he needed it.

My son felt nauseated daily when he was on this med.  The problem being each antibiotic will cover different bugs - so finding an antibiotic that you can tolerate is tough.

Actually I do take a probiotic daily whenever I'm on an antibiotic and for some time afterward until my gut has a change to rejuvenate.

My problem with antibiotics isn't lower GI.  For some reason I don't get diarrhea or any problems like that when I take then.  (My son does, though!)

My issue is strictly upper GI...my stomach reacts strongly and I get some serious pain an discomfort right there.  Before my surgery I'd get esophagitis as well, and then my lungs would become involved and one time I even was hospitalized as a direct result of taking Augmentin.  (I'll never take that again...both times I took it I ended up with gastritis an esophagitis.  My "old" PCP always jokes about it, and threatens to put me on it. wink )

I've avoided taking ANYTHING other than Amoxicllin and Z-Pac because of my past history. I don't look forward to getting severe stomach pain again.  Still, I realize that at some point I'll just have to take something else.

My search is for an antibiotic that someone else with a reactive stomach can tolerate without sending their stomach into a tizzy.

It seems that there aren't many with my issues on this front.  I could never get a GI doc to give me any guidance.  It's as if my problem is totally unique.

It can't be, can it?

Denise, have you tried talking to a pharmacist? I'm just wondering if there are different preparations that can deliver the drug to the small intestine, enteric coated type thing, so that all the stomach has to do is pass it on to be released further down? I know the French have suppository versions of drugs, including (I think) antibiotics as that is their preferred route of delivery! It may have to be ordered in for you, but possibly exists in the USA. Just a thought ....

Looks like Azithromycin is available in suppository form for paediatric use. Perhaps a willing PCP and a helpful pharmacist maybe able work out if that's an option?

Have you tried Cipro?
I'm allergic to many of the antibiotics out there but I can take cipro without stomach issues. It just causes sensitive skin reaction on my face.

Do you have a reactive stomach?  I'll keep the Cipro in mind.

It never occured to me that there would be a possibility of suppository-delivered antibiotics.  I use suppositories for acetaminophen (fever) and compazine (stomach bugs).  I'll definitely discuss my situation with a pharmacist sometime very soon.  I know that there are compounding pharmacists who actually put together certain drugs.  I'll let you know if I find anything out.  The enteric coated tablets is another thought.

With sulfa drugs I have severe shortness of breath. Amoxycillin and others cause me to vomit, no matter how careful I am to eat with them. Pen. causes hives. Needless to say, I do what I can to prevent infections when possible.

Thanks for the suggestion and information.  I am also allergic to sulfa (I used it too much for bladder infections, and one day I became allergic.) 

I agree...try to avoid them if at all possible.  Unfortunately, this year I've used antibiotics too much...August lung infection, October serious injury and risk of infection, January lung/sinus, March, sinus infection.  It's an unusual circumstance, and hopefully won't be repeated this year.

I am sorry I was not much help as the only antibiotic that ever did me in was Tetracycline.  I had  full blown  anaphylaxis with a very quick ride to the ER.


I do hope this infection clears up and no more antibiotics for you for  the rest of the year.

I haven't had any stomach issues with them, but my gut sure hates augmentin. They had me on Cipro every day I was in the hospital last year. IV of course. If this infection doesn't clear up in 3 more days I am being put on Levaquin since I have been through amox and augmentin twice already in the last 2 months. This crud just doesn't want to go away.
Michelle thinks I am getting pneumonia since I am getting short of breath just going up the stairs.

I am feeling better...The sinus infection seems pretty clear.  I just finished the last of the Z-Pack and it will still be working for a few days. 

My problem now is POLLEN!  It's brutal out there.  I'm under the care of an allergist, but for years they really haven't been able to get control of my allergies.  I've just built up to full strength a stronger version of my shots...I now get 3 shots every 2 weeks.  They added mold and dog, and strengthened the other things in the serum.  I see the allergist on April 20th, and I'm going to have lots of questions for him.

When I go out at all I can feel it in my sinuses first.  I may get some itchy eyes, but the sinuses are always a problem.

I don't want to have to stay indoors whenever it's beautiful out, but that's the situation right now.  They've got to figure out a way to help me enjoy the great out-of-doors.  I love to hike and walk outside and it's so frustrating that I can't.

The allergist says I should be able to go outside, but that's easy for him to say.  He needs to get me into a condition so that I can!

On the bright side, since my surgery my lungs have been great.  (That is, until the pollen gets to them!)

Enough complaining.

Hi denise

Dont like to necro old threads but i know youre still around. I finished a round of flucloxacillin last Wed and all hell has broken loose with my stomach. Strange thing is I didnt feel too bad when aftually on them its since ive stopped that my nausea is just unbearable. Did you ever get anything like this?
