i have been on nexium for a year then switched to prilosec over the summer. I need to get off this medicine as i have osteoporosis. I have gone every other day with prilosec. need to have a plan- when i don't take it it get terrible acid- unbearable. any ideas?

Diet is Key. I am on the alkaline diet and it really has helped. It is super annoying and takes some getting used to but it's worth it. Basically it's fish and chicken as well as alkaline vegetables and fruits. Nuts like almonds are also on the list. I have scratched dairy and starches for now until I am consistently doing well. You may want to look into some homeopathic remedies. A few have helped in conjunction with diet.

If you can make-do with other acid reducers, that might be a plan, but if not I would ignore the reports of osteoporosis unless strongly recommended by my doctor. I have read other reports saying they are overdone a little. I would talk with my doctor before just jumping off PPIs on my own.

I was on PPIs for about 15 years, maybe more like 20. Whenever they first came out. They saved me from acid, although not from reflux. At least my throat wasn't wrecked.

You might try to figure out what is the cause or trigger for your reflux. If it's constant, do you have a bad valve? If it's associated with certain meals, do you have a specific set of food triggers? That was a good bit of my problem.

Lastly, and I consider it a last resort, have you considered surgery?
