What causes a white coated tongue?

 Hi,just wondering if anyone knows what causes a white coating on the tongue,i have had this from ive had a nissen done about eight weeks ago.Ive tried brushing it and cleaning with various lotions but it wont clear up.I know its not a serious problem at the minute as i have a few other issues post op,but has anyone else experienced this after surgery? Thanks! Barry

Hey Barry, I haven't had the surgery, but have you ruled out thrush?

Also, what lotion are you using inside of your mouth?

Hi,aeshleyrose, thanks for your reply,i just looked up thrush there and you could be right as it can come from being malnourished.I never ate or drank anything a week after my surgery,lost a lot of weight and was very weak.I didnt have it before i went into hospital.Ive tried a few mouthwashes and brushing numerous times a day which make no difference,guess im going to have to visit GP again,their sick of looking at me at my surgery! lol Thanks. Hi Baza,

Definitely sounds like thrush.  There is a prescription rinse for that...also a pill, but I'd go with the rinse.  It works fine.

Be sure to get it checked out tomorrow.

In the UK you can get mouthwash OTC called Corsodyl Daily. I use it often because my asthma inhalers make me prone to oral thrush (too busy dashing around in the mornings to rinse out after using them!).

In just a few days of coming home after surgery, I noticed a white tongue and from what I read, it was probably thrush. I was going to make a trip to Dr., but read that eating yogurt can help. I ate yogurt three or four times and by day 2, it was almost gone and then it cleared up entirely on its own. Apparently the anitbiotics given in hospital contribute also to getting thrush.

Hi,thanks very much everyone for the replies! Ive tried Corsodyl and a few other otc mouthwashes but no luck in clearing it,it must need something stronger,have to wait two weeks on an appointment with GP now! NhS is getting worse! Thanks Again Barry

Hi,

You in the UK like me then. You can buy Fluconazole tablet (single dose) over the counter as a thrush treatment - I say over the counter but it is "pharmacist assisted" I.e. You get 20 questions before they let you have it. Some chemists like Lloyds do consultations, so whilst waiting you could ask a chemist if it looks like thrush.

Xylitol might be worth a punt too.

I am an acupuncturist and just had the Nissen surgery 1 week ago. I also have a white tongue coat. It comes from the antibiotics and the anesthesia. In Chinese Medicine they recommend eating mostly warm cooked foods and drinking only warm liquids and not so much dairy. I cook and puree vegetables and eat them as soup blended with bone broth. I have cream of rice for breakfast. I am on a two week liquid diet after surgery, and recovering quite well. I also take a lot of probiotics, because the antibiotics wipe out the good flora in your gut. Yoghurt is ok, but it is cold, dairy, which can contribute to white tongue coating and does not have enough probiotics, so I use a good, strong probiotic powder instead.
