My acid reflux started about 1 year ago. I am a 51 year old male. However recently I have been eating better doing the right things and the pain in my stomach is gone. But now I hav acid in the throat which started about a month ago and I am going crazy. My family doctor has me on previcid or the generic Lansoprazole. I am wondering if I need to switch to something else or another doctor. I am drinking lots of water, elevated the bed, but I seem to be getting worse. I nned suggestions on how to soothe the throat and help heal the throat. This is getting painful

you want to see a gastro and ENT for throat reflux.

Throat reflux is pretty serious. just check a few of threads on this board.

When you say you have acid in the throat, do you mean you are getting a sore throat, or that you literally have stomach fluid coming into your throat?

If it's just a sore throat, it probably means your PPI medication isn't neutralizing enough acid. I'd suggest a higher dosage of your PPI or a timed release PPI. Plain generic Lansoprazole that is not timed release can wear off surprisingly quickly, leaving you vulnerable to throat burn. I'd suggest trying Prevacid 24HR or Dexilant.

If you are literally getting fluid refluxing into your throat, the PPI's won't be able to stop that. If it's too bothersome, you'd probably need to address that with surgery, such as the Linx or Nissen.

I really don't know if its actual acid in the throat. I am knew to this about a month now. I had problems with gerds going on a year but have no stomach pain as I have been on the lansoprazole for about 5 weeks. I still burp but not as frequent as before the meds. I have elevated the bed, drink plenty of water and am now watching what I eat. However I have this burning taste in my throat, slight hoarseness, minor cough to clear and other symptoms that seem to be acid in the throat as describe in testimonials. I went to gastro doctor last year at the start of this and he told me to eat better. Now I am meds from my family doctor but have a whole new set of symptons (the throat). Just wondering if I need another doctor or different meds?

Drinking plenty of water is a bad idea. When you have reflux you don't want to fill up your stomach or it will push acid out. So you should sip water in small amounts during the day rather than big glasses of it. Also eat in smaller quantities. If fluid is coming up into your throat try not to have a full belly or put pressure on it. Don't wear tight pants or belt, don't bend over, or lay on your stomach. You probably don't need a new doctor, but should experiment more to see if you can keep stuff in your stomach better by being careful.

You might need to adjust your medication if you're getting a lot of burning feeling in your throat. So you could ask your doctor about that.

Hello and welcome to HealingWell.  I feel that you should seek out the opinion of a GI specialist for a medical screening exam and to help you with your problems.  Perhaps you need further tests to confirm your dx of GERD .

contacted my family doctor about the burning throat sensation. The doctor stated to take mylanta or tums and if not better in two weeks come back for a visit. I wonder if anyone else is taking a ppi and mylanta. Seems like they are both doing the same thing. Just curious

Hi Bat5,

A PPI is an acid-suppressing medication, but Mylanta is only an antacid - it seeks to neutralize stomach acidity. When used together, they can compliment each other nicely :)

I personally take Nexium (a PPI) once a day, and use Gaviscon (an antacid) when things are bad.

amazing, started the kauffman diet (3rd day) and chewing gum after each meal. Still have issue but the its 50% better and I can function as a person. Anyone use the kauffman diet and after two weeks go back to their regular diet. Just curious.

So you had the Linx surgery? How long ago? Did you start the kauffman diet before or after surgery

The koufman diet does help a lot. It is challanging. Right now I still have mild symptoms while on a ppi and the diet. I think sometimes it takes a lot longer than 2 weeks before you can eat some "normal" things. Im pretty much going to stay on the diet indefinetly, maybe I can enjoy some of the foods I like in moderation.

The burning hot throat I thought was getting better is feeling worse today. I have been on the Kauffman diet for 4 days. Does anyone have a timeline for the throat healing from the acid or pepsin. Its not painful just a discomfort. It taste like I have a cotton mouth or bad sour taste on the back of my tongue and left side of my throat. Also, should I stop going to the gym. I went this morning and did my normal routine which includes treadmill and weights. Just curious as to a typical healing time for the tongue and throat as the stomach now feels fine.
