Hi I am a little more than eight months post nissen and I am starting to have some throat and neck issues. My neck is still and throat seems to be closed. I can swallow but it is a little restricted. I can tell some difference with my breathing also. Could this be a structure? Has anyone else experienced this? If so what were results. Did they dialate the throat. I have appt. With gi dr. In couple of weeks. Any thoughts

Hi Fundo,

What you're describing almost sounds like an allergic reaction.  Do you have allergies?  Have you eaten or taken anything new that you may be allergic to? 

I had my Nissen about 3 and a half years ago, and while there were certainly quirks that lasted a year or longer (that finally settled down), I don't remember ever having the symptoms you've described in relation to my recovery.

I do have allergies and can have throat and breathing issues for that reason.

yes i do have allergies but i do not think that is what this is. It has been going on for about a month and a have although not everyday. Some days are not as bad as others. That is why I am suspicious of a stricture. I could be wrong though

Hi Fundo,

Could be...I haven't heard of strictures developing as a result, or in spite of a Nissen sugery, but everyone's different.  I'm sure anything's possible.

Let us know what you find out from your appointment.  That way others can learn from your experience!

Hi Fundo,i had nissen done back in March and had a lot of problems and it turned out that the hiatal part of the op was too tight at the diaphram which causes breathing problems and food,liquids getting stuck or slow to go through.Surgeon told me this can happen after surgery due to strictures or scar tissue.Dont know if i beleive him or not,maybe he just done it too tight.But its possible something like this is whats happening to you.I had a barium test which showed liquid wasnt going through properly.Hope you get sorted! Forgot to explain that its not the wrap that too tight but the crural repair thats done to prevent the wrap migrating up into the chest.I was unaware that this was done in a nissen fundoplication.ii didnt have a hernia either.Thanks Barry

i was wondering what they did when they found the restriction you were speaking of. Did they dialate the esophagus. what was the treatment. Do you still have that problem

Hi fundo, they went in again and undone it to loosen it up,also used a bougie to make sure everything would go through.done a flouroscopy the next day and everything went through no problem.Within a week i was back in hospital with the same problem,they think its all the swelling now.Just at home now waiting to see if swelling goes down.I feel a bit better but still having problems.The thing that worries me is that ive no idea if the wrap is working as all my problems where from the hiatal part.i think im refluxing and im back on ppi,s.Not a great story i know! Barry
