Hi nofun,Welcome to the Healing Well GERD forum! Sorry to hear you're suffering. If you're regurging as much as you're describing, it sounds like you'd be a good candidate for a Nissen surgery. Have you discussed this problem with your GI doctor? Have you had any testing (endoscopy, 24 hr PH monitor, manometry, barium swallow)? If not, I think it's time to make an appointment with a specialist.
I'm assuming you have the head of your bed elevated...if not, that would be a good stopgap measure. Also, no eating for 4 hours before bedtime.
It's very possible to regurge even on PPIs. If your LES doesn't hold your stomach contents in, and allows them to migrate into your throat, a PPI's not going to do anything to stop that. The only thing a PPI can do is reduce the acid content in the refluxate.
As for why vomiting helps...I would guess because it empties your stomach. Still, I wouldn't think it is a wise course of action, so be sure to discuss that strategy with your surgeon. I would think it would only do more damage in the long run.
Again, glad you've joined us. I'm sure others will be by to say hi and offer their own suggestions and support.
Very best wishes,
Denise
