I have personally experience with this. My esophagus was torn during and EGD on Feb. 28th 2011. I had the normal irritation when I got home ad laid down to take my usual nap after this. I was awoken about 30 minutes later by fairly bad heartburn. I ate 2 malox chewables, these usually work very well for me when I have heartburn. Went back to sleep and was awoken again about 30 minutes later with even worse heartburn. Repeated the malox and continued this cycle 2 more times. I had the EGD at 10am and by 2:30pm I was in so much pain I could barely breath.
The pain started out as heartburn and continued on until my whole chest front to back and side to side was hurting.
If the pain is worse then you have ever had before after an EGD and doesn't get better soon or gets worse, myself I would go to the ER. It's better to be error on the safe side. The GI doctor did not know he had torn my esophagus during the EGD. The found mine by doing a CT scan with thin barium.
If you had dilatation there could be some extra soreness, but min never lasted more than the day of the EGD when I had dilatation.
I don't want to scare you, but a perforation can be very dangerous. If you feel something isn't right I would at least cal your GI's on call number. I do hope you do not have a perforation.
Take care,
Bill
