When to take PPI

I get the best effect if I take 30 - 60 mins before breakfast. If I eat too early then I am usually sick straight after breakfast, and if I eat too much later it does not seem to be as effective. If I take and do not eat then by mid afternoon I am needing another dose. I was recently speaking with someone who was taking 3 x 30mg doses per day but was taking one straight before eating, one at lunch and one right before bed, even then he was saying that often it does not work. I explained the timing issue and he is trying to follow the 30 min rule. I have to sometimes ask what doctors are thinking when they just prescribe a higher dose without explaining the best method of administration.

I'm currently taking Dexilant, and I actually take it immediately before I eat my breakfast. It can be taken with or without food, and my doctor said it would be ok to take it as I get ready to eat in the morning. My last endoscopy showed that my esophagitis has healed, so it must be working.

Before Dexilant I was on Nexium and omeprazole. Those I was told to take 60 minutes before eating.

Thanks Kitt. That is what I thought, but I didn't know I had to eat at the 60 minute mark tops. I'll definitely become more disciplined in this.

For me, my symptoms only improved when I learnt to take it at night. Taking it in the morning gives me no protection from morning nausea and I always felt it useless to take it AFTER the nighttime reflux had already happened!! However, the evidence is good for taking it in the morning - despite the fact it doesn't work for me!
