Hi, after reading some of the stories and hearing so much don't know whether to get it done or not - on tablets for last two years - getting endoscopy on thursday - has anyone had burning sensation in mouth and numbness in chin from acid at night time?  stomach bloated a lot and vomitting - don't know what to do....

 getting the wrap done and have a large hernia - does everyone who gets gerd have hernia as well? is this common

Welcome to Healing well.

Most everyone has a hiatal hernia to some extent, but not everyone is bothered by it. If you have a large hernia and you have the testing done that shows you are a good candidate for the surgery, myself I would do it. Remember this is just my opinion and not medical advice. I have gone through it 3 times and will do it again without hesitation should I need it redone again. It has help me tremendously.

Besides an EGD yo should at least get a PH study, manometry, and possibly a barium swallow and stomach emptying test. The PH study will show your reflux amount and the manometry will show if you have any swallowing issues. As long as you don't have severe swalowing issues they can decide which wrap would be best for you.

also be sure to find a surgeon who has done a lot of the successfully.

Hi MittenC,

I know that it is a very difficult decision, and there are some scary posts online.  I struggled over whether or not to have the surgery for far too long and have some permanent health issues as a result.  I had the surgery done a little over 3 years ago, and only wish I'd had the courage to do it sooner.  My situation was a little different...I was having severe asthma for 5-6 years and my PCP and asthma docs both were confident that it was being made uncontrollable because of reflux.  My GI doc wasn't cooperative, and I didn't push for the same reason you're hesitant.  Oh well...water over the dam as they say!
