traveling far from home for surgery

For those that have traveled far from home for their surgery, can you talk about the pros and cons of getting surgery far from home. Obviously, if we choose to go to a far away surgeon, we have good reasons, but I am wondering about the follow up care, what to do if an emergency arises after surgery, etc. I want the best possible surgeon, think I've found one, but it's 5-6 hours away from our home. I am comfortable having the surgery done far from home, but am concerned about the months following. Any advice out there?

I have never traveled far from home for medical care however I know many people who have. I have a friend that went to Europe for surgery on a bad hip - now that is a long way. If I had to I would make the journey if it meant I would receive better care by traveling.

5-6 hours does not sound that far but I am not the one that is going to have to deal with the distance issue, you are. I would be sure to have a physician near your home town that is knowledgable re post surgical care and if you feel comfortable in making the journey then I think you will be OK.

I hope someone is going to be able to go with you and stay with you through out your time away.
