Hi edtorres,I also started having little burps at the hospital immediately after my surgery. I worried about that, since my surgeon had warned me that I wouldn't be able to burp or vomit (as it turns out I could vomit, too, but I always carry anti-nausea drugs with me, because although I can vomit doesn't mean should. Vomiting is very hard on the wrap. Be sure to get a script for anti-nausea drugs from your PCP or surgeon. I digress...).
My surgeon said that some people are able to burp, and that it would be a benefit. (Sorry buzzmon, I wish I could bestow the burping ability on you!) Because of my stomach's ability to burp itself, I didn't have bloating issues during recovery. Occasionally the gas would get ahead of my wrap-flap's abilitiy to burp, and I'd get some bloating, but overall the burping was a huge benefit. This still happens occasionally. (My son recently get engaged and we toasted the happy event with a couple glasses of champagne. I ended up with TERRIBLE bloat. I could count the number of bloating episodes I've had since my surgery (Feb. 2009) on one hand. It seems that once the bloat gets ahead of the wrap's ability to let out air, it pushes up against the wrap and doesn't allow the gas to escape, so it has to wait until it makes its way out the "back door". My sincere sympathy, buzzmon. OUCH!)
I would not say I can burp. I don't really have the ability to control when I burp, but rather, I refer to it as my stomach burping itself. Sometimes I let out a pretty big belch (at home...when in polite company I'm able to keep them more subdued), or even several (and it's welcome...I was never a big burper, but with the wrap controlling my burps, I always appreciate the release). I can't just decide to burp and make it happen. My stomach is in charge...
Don't worry about your burps for a moment.
Happy healing, one and all!
Denise
