Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help me, I'm 30 years of age and I've had acid reflux/GERD since 2006 but only found out 6 months ago I had it.

I have been doctors for years, this first started in 2006 on lads holiday when drinking excess amounts and eating I would just be sick.

Has anyone had the same kind of issues? This has affected my life so much the doctors thought it was my nervous and would send me for counselling and give me tablets to calm my nervous down.

Only 6 months ago they sent me for camera down my throat,
belium meal, acid reader for 24 hours.

Now they have said I've got Acid reflux and I need the operation from 24 hours reader the levels for acid reflux is 17 so the doctor said but mine was 55.

I have been through hell with this for 6 years its affected me so much even in crowded places like parties,buses,football grounds I would get sick.

After reading about the nissen fundoplication I just read negative comments about the op, Sadly the new lynx system is not affordable for me.

Would be great to get some information and feedback regarding the op and how it has affected people in past before the op :-)

Hi JayMc,

Welcome to Healing Well!   It sounds like you're in exactly the right place.  I had the surgery nearly 4 years ago, and am extremely happy I did.  Nissen fundoplication is the gold standard for GERD treatment and has been used for over 50 years...at first it was an open procedure, but nearly 20 years ago it because a laproscopic procedure for most people...mine was.

Like you, I was fearful to have the surgery because when I searched online I found many very scary posts written by people who'd had the surgery, that warned against having it.  Toward the end of my journal I wrote some thoughts about the surgery in general that you might find helpful.

Thankfully, I found this very positive, realistic, and helpful forum.  People here helped me make the decision to have the surgery, and later helped me through the recovery. That's why I stuck around to help others.  I know there's not much helpful information out there, so this forum is a real blessing.

If your surgeon thinks you are a good candidate for the nissen and your GERD isn't controlled with diet and meds, I would go for the surgery.

It has changed my life. I can eat and drink anything I want to now and only get very occasional heart burn(like people without GERD). Wish I wouldn't have waited 17 or so years before doing this.

It is a long recovery that needs you to be very patient though, but the end results are worth it.

smilewinkgrin  I'm doing remarkably well after Nissen and Hiatual Hernia repair on 10/31. Between the best surgeon in this area and my church including my former Pastor I'm sailing through it. I did have a rather unusual insident in church. I sing on the worship team and we were in the cafe practicing our special. I decided to try a donut for the first time took too big abite and it got stuck! (All my fault!!!).The problem begin with my leader who is also an MD.He had forgotten about my surgery and wanted to give me a Heimlich! I very quickly reminded him and the fact that I could talk quickly stopped him. He told me that you could cause alot of damage to my surgery. So strange but true if you are in public and begin having problems beware of helpful people who could cause alot of damage!

I will be having the nissen on December 10th. I am so ready to get to feeling better from all the ailments the drs say will improve after the surgery. I am also having a hernia repaired at the same time. My only concern is the amount of pain after surgery and having to stay in the hospital 3-4 days afterwards. Can anyone tell me their experience with this surgery and what I can really expect.
