Hi there

Im really beginning to get extremely stressed out by this. I have been suffering from extreme heartburn for more than 2 years, I have had many blood tests and been on many medications. I was referred for a scope but did not receive this as the doctors said 'it wouldnt be beneficial to me' so i was referred to a specialist gastroenterology unit where i had the 24 hour PH tests done. My follow up appointment is not until April which i find ridiculous as i was taken off my medication and i am still suffering from extreme heartburn, weeziness in throat,loud noises in stomach, coughing(which i was told wasnt linked) and fatique. Is there any advice from anyone? Im only 22 and have another year of university to get through with this illness and it is really affecting how i live. Ive cut out all the foods that may trigger heartburn even though they all do and lost weight. I don't smoke and have cut down on alcohol.

Any advice would be helpful

Hi Wkdside, I was wondering how and why docs are so sure your coughing has nothing to do with this? I have LPR and coughing is my main symptom. I also get the wheezing in throat. The treatment for LPR is different than GERD. I know that most (but not all) of LPR sufferers dont' have heartburn but i'm curious....what meds were you on before?

I'm sort of in the same boat. Did you get the results of the PH test? I have mine mid january and was told yesterday to eat whatever i want after being on a low acid diet. So for the next month of waiting I could be making myself worse!

I'm sooo new to this whole thing but wanted to respond as after ten years of bouncing back and forth to ENT's and GI docs nobody put the puzzle together until i saw an LPR expert.

As for the stress, it wont' help your cough....i keep telling myself "it's not cancer" but it's not really helping :)

Are you sure they told you you couldn't start taking your PPI again after the test? Or did they just not say anything?

They usually want you off them for a week or so BEFORE the test, but afterwards usually people go back on them (if they helped in the first place that is).

They didn't say anything to me. they sent me my referral on the saturday and the letter said to stop all ppi 10 days before..but my appointment was on the monday so that obviously wasnt 10 days. i have no ppi left as my GP took me off them.

I was on omeprozol, ranitidine, lanzaprozol THEM ALL! I was told my cough was to do with it then at the hospital they told me that it wasn't. im not getting any answers at all and the heartburn is getting worse. i never got any results from my PH test.

Well if the PPIs helped you, why not ask for another prescription? You can typically do that by calling the office without having to be seen again.

Or buy them OTC if that's possible where you live.

If you only had 1 day of being med-free before the PH test, I am not sure you will have valid PH test results. I have seen recommendations anywhere from 7 days to 14 days. 1 day surely is not enough. Assuming that means you were still blocking acid, then your PH test is going to show hardly any acid reflux.

i was wondering do you have post nasal drip with your reflux?
