Hi everyone, I've been suffering for the last 6 months with a variety of things and am still waiting to get a proper diagnosis. It all started with some heart palpitations 6 months ago which caused a lot of anxiety, then I started getting stomach pains. After the doctors had checked out my heart and gave me the all clear, I still had pains in my stomach for the next 2 weeks, which seemed to get worse.
Over the next 2 months these persisted, mostly in the upper abdomen behind my sternum and I started getting the feeling of something in my throat, almost like I constantly needed to throw up.
Over the next few months I developed an anxiety disorder and clinical depression, this stomach thing was really getting me down. I was eventually put on omeprazole, which really helped my stomach but didn't make the throat thing go away.
Anyway, all was going well in November, I had come off omeprazole for a week to have an endoscopy, then suddenly walking down the street I was in pain in my stomach. At this point the doctors had convinced me it was all anxiety pains so I carried on, for another week in pain until it was so bad I was curled up in bed. Then the burning in my esophagus got worse and worse, until I was in agony. Twice I went into A&E in complete agony and after theyd checked my heart and chest was just told to wait for my endoscopy to see what was wrong.
Anyway the endoscopy diagnosed a large hiatus hernia and mild gastritis. Fortunately no h.pylori or ulcers and everything else was negative.
But since this episode the pain in my esophagus has not gone away. I'm no longer in agony but it is constantly there. i've been given domperidome and been on it for a month, as well as ranitadine and double the dose of omeprazole. This has definitely helped with the chest pain, im not in agony anymore, but Im still in pain.
Anyway after being at my wits end with waiting on the NHS I paid to see a private GE, who said my symptoms didnt sound typical of reflux and he'd want to do more tests. Im due to have a ph test soon.
Anyway what he said was strange was that I complained most about standing up, and exercise, he said they should make reflux better. My best position is to be lying down with my back inclined at 45 degrees, this is how I sleep now too and really eases the pain. When I exercise I get what feels like a ball in my throat which only gets worse, and also pain right behind my sternum. Gaviscon only marginally seems to help this. Oddly it is better directly after eating, but soon gets bad again. Its awful if i eat a large portion.
Anyway, I was wondering does this sound similar to other peoples experiences? I've been on all these drugs a month now and am still in pain. i am considering getting surgery for it but after a lot of stories Ive heard about it it doesnt sound like a pleasent experience with possible after effects, I wonder if maybe im being too impatient and it could settle down in a few months by itself? On the other hand going through these stressful periods seems to make the chest pain worse every time and i dont think I can take another 'attack'.
