Being hungry and reflux...?

I have noticed that my reflux will also kick in to high gear when I am hungry...is this normal? Anyone else experience that at all???

I read that you shouldn't have an empty stomach with Reflux. Part of the reason for small, frequent meals. But most of us feel best in the morning before the first meal?...Maybe because the acid in your stomach is just that rather than acid + food to dilute it? Just a theory.

You are always going to have an empty stomach after sleeping all night. Mine sometimes burns at night. Some people have sensitive stomachs, vulnerable to all the stuff that happens with GERD. If you have not been tested for an h. Pylori infection, that is a possibility.

I do not have trouble with GERD when my stomach is empty but I do feel thegspeak and sunbeam had some good theories for you to think about.

Remember each of us is different and our symptoms are unique to us.  Hopefully another member will have more info for you.

I would say I'm at my worst when hungry. I cannot tolerate an empty tum for long and mornings used to be my worst time of day when I always woke feeling sick. However, I also have mild gastritis and I wonder now, reading this thread, whether it's the gastritis part of my GERD that does not tolerate emptiness. My reflux symptoms are also helped by eating, I think simply because the chewing sends everything back in the right direction, which is why chewing gum also helps.

Currently, and of course good things don't always last, milk thistle has given me the most significant reflux relief so far. I have been taking it for three months now, which is the most sustained benefit I've had from a herb or supplement so far. Acupuncture successfully treated my morning nausea. Sadly nothing has fixed me enough to let the new year in with a glass of wine :-(

I was also diagnosed with gastritis awhile back.  I've been reading that H. pylori is frequently treated with PPI's, it does not tolerate a low acid environment.  Antibiotics are also often used.  Seems we wouldn't have it if we are on PPI's for wahile, but people often mention getting tested for it, so I'm not clear on the whys of that.

Most of us are tested for Helicobacter pylori every time we go near the hospital. I've tested repeatedly negative for it. If you're positive you are treated with high dose PPIs and strong antibiotics and also bi****h.

I'm not sure what causes my own gastritis, but I often think it must be related to my food allergies as my stomach and my skin can flare at the same time. But I've not been able to pinpoint anything. I don't think I ever had excess acid - just a sore stomach lining!

So it sounds likely that I was tested, just don't remember it, and have a sensitive stomach like you. I am doing eliminations of lactose and wheat, to see if that makes a difference.

Sam, you could also try that.
