Hi reet22,Sorry you're facing a redo, but indeed, redos provide great relief. One moderator here, Bill, has had 3 (the first was done incorrectly, the second fixed it and all was wonderful. Then he had an unrelated issue and was forced into a third when a doc damaged the second with complications after an endoscopy accident. I'm not explaining the reason for the third one properly, but it wasn't a spontaneous fail.)
One of the reasons I felt comfortable to get my Nissen (Feb. 2009) was because of the very positive attitudes of others who had received redos, or were anxiously looking forward to their redo surgery. Of course nobody wants to need a redo, but should it happen, it's good to know that the option is available.
I do know that surgeons don't do redos lightly, and that it's even more important to get the very best Nissen surgeon to do it. It's important to find someone who is experienced in the redo procedure, as it is much trickier than the first.
Is it possible that the redo won't fix you as perfectly as the first? Sure. That's always a risk. I think your surgeon may be refering to research saying that the results aren't as good as with the first Nissen. But what's the alternative? Often people don't get 100% protection from symptoms (especially LPR) after Nissen, but the symptoms are greatly improved and the improvement is welcomed.
Hopefully, Bill will be by to weigh in soon and provide you with some comfort. He's thrilled with his outcomes and has done very well post Nissen #3.
You'll have to search out a surgeon. Take your time and research him/her throughly. It's the most important step. Once you've found the right one, you'll be ready to get he redo done and get back to enjoying your life again!
Best wishes in your search for answers!
Denise
