I had my first symptoms of acid reflux when I was a young child. It was always just a fact of life for me. When I was pregnant, I had heartburn so bad it triggered my gag reflex & I would vomit. For years, I slept with a bottle of Pepto Bismol next to me every night. I used milk to cool off my burn even though I had heard it makes it worse over time. I was also very gassy & I had belly fat that wouldn't shrink no matter how much weight I lost. I heard about the blood type diet years ago & thought it sounded weird like so many other trendy diets. I always believed nutrition should come from many sources & the key is moderation. But last year, I ran into a friend who was once very overweight & she had lost quite a bit. She said it was the blood type diet. So I looked into it. Being a blood type O, I found I would need to eat a lot of red meat. I was even more skeptical because I heard to much red meat contributes to heart disease. So I looked at some other independent research on the subject & learned that type O's have a natural protection against heart disease, not that they don't get it, but they get it disproportionately less than type A's, who interestingly, are supposed to avoid red meat on the blood type diet. Apparently, type O's have 80 some percent more stomach acid than type A's. Different blood types actually have different digestive systems. Type O's need red meat to utilize their natural stomach acid while type A's need wheat & gluten to enhance their low acid. Type B & AB are somewhere in the middle & have their own diets to follow. I thought I'd try it for a week. Within the first few days, I no longer needed my Pepto Bismol. So I thought I'd try it for a month. After the first week, my belly began to flatten & my gas subsided. I have followed this diet for over a year now & it has changed my life. Red meat calms my system while it causes heartburn for my husband, who is type A. My family is a mix & it's a challenge, but it's worth it. There may be many reasons for heartburn that are more than just diet, but this is definitely worth a shot. If you don't know your blood type, you can purchase a kit for about $10 online or donate blood to the Red Cross & they will send you a card with your type. I never bought the book or spent any money on official blood type products, all the information is online & you can print it from various websites. The official website is
http://www.dadamo.com/ where you can learn about the different blood types, the right & wrong foods, purchase blood type kits & more. I did buy the blood type app for my iPhone & I use it when I plan dinners for my family & go grocery shopping. I have had to modify the diet over time, as I am sensitive to a few things that it says I can have, like soy. I figure it's the closest we can get to a personalized diet without paying thousands of dollars for DNA testing. Has anyone else tried this diet for acid reflux with good or bad results? If you haven't I recommend giving it a try & tell me how it worked for you.
