Here's a link to the lastest article in the BMJ this week comparing laparoscopic fundo with medication.

In conclusion the paper states that lap fundo "continued to provide better relief of symptoms with associated improved quality of life". It also adds that complications are rare and there was NO evidence of any long term unwanted symptoms such as difficulty swallowing.
